With the announcement Tuesday that Lucasfilm and Colin Trevorrow have parted ways, the Star Wars franchise continues its streak as the most troubled blockbuster series around when it comes to keeping directors. Trevorrow is the fourth ousted helmer from the franchise in the past two years. Is the Resistance in trouble, or is everything still on target? The Hollywood Reporter's Graeme McMillan, Ryan Parker and Aaron Couch discuss what Trevorrow's exit means for Star Wars: Episode IX, Lucasfilm's hiring practices and more. McMillan: So Colin Trevorrow is out as director of Star Wars: Episode IX. The Lucasfilm statement on the "mutually chosen" parting of the ways is so vague as to be almost worthless, but it's fair to say that a lot of people — my cynical self included — have been wondering if this was in the cards since The Book of Henry was slaughtered by critics earlier this summer, despite Trevorrow's subsequent attempts to calm the waters. Is this a surprise? Couch: It's … [Read more...] about Why Do ‘Star Wars’ Films Keep Losing Directors?

I want an Ewok film. After announcing that is was purchasing Lucasfilm and launching a new Star Wars trilogy, Disney has parceled out yet another piece of information. It plans to make standalone films set in the Star Wars universe. They wouldn't have any bearing on the direction of the trilogy, but would take certain characters or worlds from Star Wars and build feature films around them. This actuallyisn't a new idea. Though many people's exposure to Star Wars has only been the feature films, there have been animated series based on Star Wars as well as lower-profile features. The Ewoks have actually already appeared in the 1980s made-for-TV movies The Ewok Adventure and Ewoks: Battle for Endor, and the animated series "Star Wars: Ewoks."Disney spent $4 billion on Lucasfilm, and a single trilogy is unlikely to recoup that sum--even with merchandise included. Disney is also planning more films as a way to hedge its bets with the trilogy. The concern now is not the trilogy's … [Read more...] about More ‘Star Wars’ films to go beyond new trilogy–but which characters will make the cut?
