Calvin Harris can't shake it off ... his ex, that is. And you really can't blame him. The superstar DJ hit up Cabo San Lucas with his on-off -- and apparently now totally on again -- ex-gf Aarika Wolf . She's the incredibly gorgeous bikini model Calvin dated for nearly a year back in 2015 ... before he left her for Taylor Swift . And we know how that ended ... but we digress. Calvin and Aarika soaked the sun on a yacht before jumping on a jet ski. They reunited last August before splitting up a few months later. Clearly ... old flames die hard. … [Read more...] about Calvin Harris Parties with Bikini-Clad Ex-GF in Mexico

Wincing The Night Away
The Shins ’ 2001 Oh, Inverted World was a siren song from a familiar type: “pimpled and angry” outsider saved by music, but still cut off from the love he seeks by unkind women and cruel fate. In 2003, Chutes Too Narrow topped two pained kiss-off songs with four fatalistic philosophical ones, then shifted into a nostalgic tribute to a girlfriend from the pimpled years, two self-critical relationship songs, and an enigmatic acoustic finale for “Those to Come,” who are “waiting in the ether to form, feel, kill, propagate, only to die.” The shapeliness of this sequence wasn’t instantly self-evident. But nothing less would have suited one of the deftest, subtlest and just plain loveliest guitar-rock albums of the decade. More than three years later, James Mercer and his mates have finally followed up that indie-rock touchstone. Because Mercer is adored for his musical facility, not his thematic depth, anything short of a Metal Machine Music homage will be ecstatically received, … [Read more...] about Wincing The Night Away

It’s Quinta Brunson’s World and We’re All Just Laughing in It
Quinta Brunson — creator, executive producer, and star of the hit comedy Abbott Elementary — could moonlight as a tour guide. She meets me at the Warner Bros. Television building on a crisp day in April. The building, tucked behind bushes and an open-air set of a quaint city street, is boxy and drab, one of the least magnificent structures I see on the massive lot. And yet Brunson has a way of showing its hidden magic. Flanked by a publicist and a studio rep, we load into a golf cart, where Brunson leads me on a tour of the WB campus — it also just happens to be a tour of one of the most exciting young careers in comedy. In fact, while we chat in front of an outdoor set of a white church used in Gilmore Girls and Pretty Little Liars , an eager fan on a stretch cart packed with visitors on a guided tour loudly points her out. In 2018, she was cast as a lead in a CW series called The End of the World As We Know It after auditioning in this very building. The show never … [Read more...] about It’s Quinta Brunson’s World and We’re All Just Laughing in It
VidCon 2022 Was a Candy-Colored, Covid-Spreading, Content-Creating Extravaganza
After two years on hiatus due to the Covid-19 pandemic, VidCon — the annual convention for fans, creators, and online platform industry types — returned to the Anaheim Convention Center last week. But it looked a little different than usual. For starters, the ear-piercing shrieks of fans lining up to meet their favorite creators were just a little quieter. With 50,000 attendees as opposed to 2019’s 75,000, the convention was somewhat smaller than it previously had been. Further, unlike VidCons of years past, some attendees were wearing masks, albeit an infinitesimally small number among the hordes of preteens angling for photo ops with their favorite creators (days later, several attendees of VidCon, which required proof of vaccination or a recent Covid test for entry, began reporting on social media that they had tested positive for COVID after the event). Perhaps most importantly, however, TikTok , the short-form video platform that dominated the app store starting in … [Read more...] about VidCon 2022 Was a Candy-Colored, Covid-Spreading, Content-Creating Extravaganza
Pilots Are Airlifting Patients Out of Red States to Get Abortions
The patient’s first two appointments were canceled. When Oklahoma’s governor signed the nation’s strictest abortion ban into law on May 26, her third was moved from a Planned Parenthood in Oklahoma City to the closest clinic with an appointment roughly a 10-hour round trip drive away, in Kansas. (The local chapter, Planned Parenthood Great Plains, covers four states — Missouri, Kansas, Oklahoma and Arkansas — and books patients across all four.) “It was a goddamn mess,” says Alison Dreith, director of strategic partnerships at Midwest Access Coalition, a Chicago-based abortion fund. A companion managed to book a rental car and get the patient to Kansas, where she expected to have a medication abortion. “When she got to Kansas,” Dreith says, “She was too far along for them to do a medication abortion. They rescheduled her because they didn’t have appointments that day for a surgical… which pissed me the fuck off because you had this person come all the way from Oklahoma, and now … [Read more...] about Pilots Are Airlifting Patients Out of Red States to Get Abortions
Jerusalem Film Festival Unveils Israeli Competition As It Gears Up For First Full Edition Since 2019
The Jerusalem Film Festival has unveiled the line-up for its Israeli feature film competition as well as all the other local productions selected to screen in its 39th edition, running 21-31. The event returns to its traditional July dates for the first time since 2019 this year, after the Covid-19 pandemic forced it online in 2020 and pushed it into August and prevented it from inviting international guests in 2021. This edition is being piloted by Jerusalem Cinematheque manager Roni Mahadav-Levin and artistic director Elad Samorzik, following the departure earlier this year of longtime cinematheque and festival director Noa Regev to head up the Israel Film Fund. Her replacement will be decided after this year’s edition. World premieres in the Israeli competition include Michal Vinik’s drama Valeria Is Getting Married about two Ukrainian sisters who travel to Israel for marriage. It is Vinik’s first solo feature since 2015 festival breakout Blush . Yona … [Read more...] about Jerusalem Film Festival Unveils Israeli Competition As It Gears Up For First Full Edition Since 2019
Establishment Democrats Crush Left-Wing Challenger in High-Profile House Primary
Kina Collins , a gun violence prevention activist and newly declared Democratic candidate for Congress, sat in the backyard of a craftsman house in the Chicago suburb of Oak Park last September and lamented the state of the Democratic party — specifically, how it tackled the subject of her activism. Young people died constantly of gun violence in her neighborhood, she explained. “We have to console the parents when their sons get scraped off the ground from being shot,” she said. “We have to deal with the abandoned buildings and vacant lots in our neighborhoods.” Rep. Danny Davis (D-Ill.), the incumbent in Illinois ’ 7th congressional district, had been in office for almost 25 years. From Collins’ perspective, he hadn’t done enough to deal with those problems. But she reserved special ire for Rep. Hakeem Jeffries (D-N.Y.), the fourth-ranking House Democrat who had recently founded a new PAC to defeat primary challengers like her. ”We don’t see the federal resources when a … [Read more...] about Establishment Democrats Crush Left-Wing Challenger in High-Profile House Primary
Jason Kander: Trump’s Support for the Troops Is a Lie
Last week, the Associated Press reported that the U.S. Army is discharging reservists and recruits who joined the military as part of a promised path to citizenship. I’ve spent time since then trying to remember if I served in the Army with anyone who wasn’t a U.S. citizen. And the truth is, I have no idea. That’s because I, and everyone else I served with, would never ask a question like that. When you wear U.S. Army on your uniform, no one ever asks your citizenship because they know everyone there is willing to die for our country, which is more than a lot of citizens are willing to do. I’m not saying everyone has to serve, I’m just saying military service is patriotic whether or not you’re a citizen. President Trump is now turning his back on men and women who bravely serve our country despite not having the privileges and rights that come with being born here. This follows a disturbing pattern. President Trump is trying to keep people of certain races and … [Read more...] about Jason Kander: Trump’s Support for the Troops Is a Lie
