Jackie Chan made a rare on-stage appearance at the Red Sea Film Festival Thursday, where he told fans that he is currently in talks to make a fourth Rush Hour movie. “We’re talking about part 4 right now,” he told the festival crowd, adding that he was going to meet with the film’s director this evening to discuss the script. He did not identify said director, but American filmmaker Brett Ratner directed all three previous versions. Ratner hasn’t directed a film since 2014. In November 2017, seven women, including actresses Olivia Munn and Natasha Henstridge, accused the filmmaker of sexual harassment and misconduct, causing Warner Bros. to sever all ties with the producer-director with whom they had a lucrative deal. Chan starred in three Rush Hour films between 1998 and 2007 alongside comedian and actor Chris Tucker. The franchise follows a Hong Kong detective inspector who forms an unlikely relationship with a loudmouthed LAPD officer to solve a series of … [Read more...] about Jackie Chan Says ‘Rush Hour 4’ Is In The Works And Teases Drama Film He Has Directed “For Women” — Red Sea Film Festival
Brad Smith, Microsoft ’s vice chair and president, and Activision Blizzard CEO Bobby Kotick both said they’re confident their $69 billion merger will close, despite news that the antitrust-buster FTC plans to challenge it in court. “This sounds alarming, so I want to reinforce my confidence that this deal will close,” Kotick said in a memo to employees. “The allegation that this deal is anti-competitive doesn’t align with the facts, and we believe we’ll win this challenge.” Smith said Microsoft has “been committed since Day One to addressing competitive concerns, including by offering earlier this week proposed concessions to the FTC. While we believed in giving peace a chance, we have complete confidence in our case and welcome the opportunity to present our case in court.” Kotick’s memo : Team, I wanted to provide a brief update on our pending merger with Microsoft. This week the U.S. Federal Trade Commission (FTC) announced its decision to challenge … [Read more...] about Microsoft, Activision Blizzard Confident Merger Will Close As FTC Prepares To Challenge $69-Billion Deal In Court – Update
Strange as it may seem, the Oscar for Best International Feature tends to go to movies that are universal rather than geographically specific. Last year’s winner Drive My Car spoke more about mankind’s default setting to loneliness than it did about the specifics of relationship dynamics in modern Japan, just as the Danish drunks in 2021’s Another Round got hammered in a way that was relatable to boozers in every country from Albania to Zambia. Maybe the Academy feels that real life is better left to docs, but a 2015 win for the harrowing Second World War drama Son of Saul suggests that the door is always open. And after a year that saw the whole world reeling from Vladmir Putin’s invasion of Ukraine, this might be one of those years that addresses the fact. Clearly, the abrupt nature of Putin’s surprise maneuver on February 24 caught many unawares, especially in an industry that can be slow to react. Maryna Er Gorbach, however, had begun work on her film Klondike — … [Read more...] about Look Back In Anger: Will Russia’s Invasion Of Ukraine Set The Agenda For This Year’s International Oscar Race?
It’s been 50 years since the passage of Title IX , which prohibits gender discrimination in institutions that receive federal funding, and the new short Mink! is a reminder of how circumstances easily could have limited the scope of its impact on sports. Mink! tells the story of the first woman of color elected to Congress, Patsy Mink , who was a key driver of of the legislation. Directed by Oscar-winner Ben Proudfoot , the Breakwater Studios short was screened earlier this week on Capitol Hill, with guests including House Speaker Nancy Pelosi , Rep. She was so eloquent and she just knew how to get the job done with a smile,” Pelosi said of Mink, who represented a Hawaii congressional district. She died in 2002. … [Read more...] about Nancy Pelosi, Naomi Osaka Pay Tribute To Groundbreaking Congresswoman At Capitol Hill ‘Mink!’ Screening
One of the more prestigious stops on the Oscar-season circuit is always the annual AFI Awards Luncheon, and on Friday the American Film Institute revealed its list of Top 10 Movies and TV Programs for 2022 ( see this post for TV list ). Major studios dominated the movie list for a change, including some box office blockbusters. Streamers were AWOL for the first time since their emergence. Avatar: The Way of Water , Elvis , Everything Everywhere All at Once, The Fabelmans , Nope , She Said, T á r, Top Gun: Maverick , The Woman King, and Women Talking are the chosen 10, in addition to an AFI Special Award for The Banshees of Inisherin, which fell outside of AFI’s mostly American financed eligibility criteria but is felt to be worthy of inclusion one way or another. No real surprises on those that got in, although Jordan Peele’s summer horror film Nope hasn’t been at the top of pundits’ list of contenders.
