Helene St. James Detroit Free Press Published 10:00 AM EDT Mar 11, 2019 SUNRISE, Fla. — The challenge for the Detroit Red Wings is to restore confidence and show they are headed in the right direction. They head to Montreal after being routed for the second time in two weeks, tarnished by a stretch of poor play that can’t be pinned entirely on a lack of personnel. As it turned out, the Wings did a better job taking on the best team in the NHL in Tampa Bay Saturday than they did Sunday when they were shelled by the Florida Panthers. The 6-1 final at BB&T Center was as ugly as the score, as the Wings lacked emotion and execution. They are headed for a third straight draft lottery, but it’s vital to their future success they don’t get there by being blown out. “We’re already out of it, so there’s no time to pout and sit around and feel bad,” veteran Thomas Vanek said. “There’s a lot of guys here who still … [Read more...] about Detroit Red Wings’ Frans Nielsen: ‘We are going backwards’
Detroit red wings lines
Helene St. James Detroit Free Press Published 10:59 AM EST Feb 26, 2019 The Detroit Red Wings were sellers for a third straight season at the trade deadline, and added more draft picks to their rebuild. Their 2019 moves numbered two: Forward Gustav Nyquist and defenseman Nick Jensen. The return wasn’t as exciting as last season, when Tomas Tatar yielded a first, second and third round pick, but he was under contract for three more years, not a pending unrestricted free agent like Gustav Nyquist. All the playoff teams had a starting goaltender, which is why no trade materialized for Jimmy Howard. Niklas Kronwall, another pending UFA, wants to remain a career Wing, and there’s too much respect for him to challenge that, on top of valuing what he brings in leadership far more than flipping him for a low-round pick. Here are grades for the two deals the Wings made before Monday’s 3 p.m. deadline. Gustav Nyquist The trade: The Wings traded him to … [Read more...] about Detroit Red Wings’ trade deadline grades: B’s for both
Helene St. James Detroit Free Press Published 1:46 PM EST Feb 25, 2019 As they head into the last quarter of their season, the Detroit Red Wings are refocusing on their future. The trade of Gustav Nyquist led to reshuffling lines, and one new look is that Andreas Athanasiou will play center the remaining 19 games. It’s an opportunity to see if he can thrive there long term, similar to what the Wings did two years when Dylan Larkin moved from wing to center. More: Wings have made 2 trades. Is anything else likely today? “If AA can be an elite-level center, that will help us in our organization so we are going to see if that’s the case,” coach Jeff Blashill said Monday. “There’s benefits to playing him at wing or center, but we’re going to see if that’s the case. He’s going to play against hard match-ups and play good minutes and ultimately see if we’re a better team with him at that position. He’s smart. He … [Read more...] about What Detroit Red Wings will do after trading Gustav Nyquist
Helene St. James Detroit Free Press Published 10:15 AM EST Feb 25, 2019 The Detroit Red Wings have made two moves ahead of the trade deadline. Might they make another? It’s possible but not probable we’ll see more action from the Wings before today’s 3 p.m. deadline. Gustav Nyquist was flipped overnight for a 2019 second-round pick and a conditional 2020 third-round pick; that followed Friday’s trade of Nick Jensen that yielded a 2020 second-round pick and defense prospect Madison Bowey. Both became expendable as the Wings were unable to reach common ground during contract extension talks. Trading Nyquist opens up a winger spot in the top six, so that could mean an opportunity for Filip Zadina to see a bigger role Tuesday when the Wings host Montreal. The return for Nyquist pales in comparison to what Tomas Tatar brought in at last year’s trade deadline – a 2018 first-round pick, 2019 second-round pick, and 2021 third-round pick, but … [Read more...] about Detroit Red Wings have made 2 trades. Helene St. James Detroit Free Press Published 5:10 PM EST Feb 19, 2019 Jeff Blashill pulled Gustav Nyquist aside to have a little chat. The Detroit Red Wings are sellers as the NHL nears Monday’s trade deadline, and Nyquist is in play because he’s a productive winger in the last year of a contract. Nyquist holds veto power over a potential move because he has a no-trade clause, but he isn’t ruling out joining another team. “Right now there are plenty of scenarios that could play out,” Nyquist said Tuesday. “It has to work for either side, that’s about as much as I will say. We will see what happens. “I have my no-trade clause, so if I get traded, obviously I have to waive it for that team. So that would have to be a decision I would have to make. There’s still a week left, so we will see what happens.” Quite possibly, nothing will. Nyquist, along with fellow pending unrestricted free agents Jimmy … [Read more...] about These Detroit Red Wings could be wanted at NHL trade deadline
