Fetty Wap, all of 24 years old, uploaded a song to SoundCloud in April of 2014 and it just, well, stuck around. “Trap Queen” — currently in its 34th week on the Hot 100 — continues to define pop ubiquity, blasting from car speakers in the middle of the day, getting requests at the club that night. The rapper, born Willie Maxwell, is at the Pepsi Center in Denver — far from his home in Paterson, New Jersey. He’s opening for Chris Brown near the tail end of a month-long, countrywide jaunt, but that’s just the tip of his celebrity: Kanye West was an early Fetty Wap supporter; Drake contributed a verse to the remix for his third hit, “My Way”; Taylor Swift covered “Trap Queen” with the rapper in Seattle. However, when Fetty Wap dropped the track list to his self-titled debut album — due out September 25th — A-list names were conspicuously absent. “I didn’t have no features on ‘Trap Queen.’ It was just me,” says Fetty on his tour bus in the shadow of the venue. He’s having his braids … [Read more...] about Remy to Rumble: Fetty Wap and His Crew Conquer America

Elton John — Hey Loser, I Didn’t Steal Your Dumb Lyrics
Elton John insists ... he did NOT steal the lyrics to his song " Nikita " -- especially not from some NO-NAME songwriter -- despite a recent lawsuit that says otherwise ... and now, Elton's asking for the suit to be thrown out of court. TMZ broke the story ... a songwriter named Guy Hobbs sued Sir Elton back in April, claiming Elton jacked his song lyrics ... then used them to pen the chart-topping 1985 hit "Nikita" ... without Hobbs' knowledge or consent. But Elton is firing back -- filing his own legal docs in response, claiming, "The suggestion that the Grammy-Award winning composer/lyricist team of Elton John and Bernie Taupin ... would need to copy these commonplace elements from [Hobbs'] lyrics is not only baseless and absurd, but it also misses the essential legal point." Which is ... Hobbs can't legally copyright an idea -- especially not something as broad as a theme involving a Western man falling for a Russian woman. According to the docs, Hobbs … [Read more...] about Elton John — Hey Loser, I Didn’t Steal Your Dumb Lyrics
The GOP Suddenly Wants to Defund Law Enforcement After Feds Raid Mar-a-Lago
After years of defending the continued militarization of law enforcement agencies across the United States, Republican lawmakers appeared to have a change of heart Monday after learning the FBI executed a search at the Florida estate of former President Donald Trump . Faced with the possibility that the “good guys” might not be on their side after all, prominent members of party that made backing the blue a central tenet of its political platform in recent years began spouting rhetoric that suspiciously mirrored many of the talking points of Conservatives’ most feared bogeyman: antifa. “The GOP majority must defund all forms of tyranny throughout Biden’s government,” prominent right-wing figurehead Rep. Lauren Boebert (R-Colo.) wrote on Twitter , tagging the official FBI account. She later added : “Weaponizing the FBI to raid President Trump’s home makes Watergate look like nothing.” Rep. Paul Gosar (R-Ariz.), meanwhile, embraced the GOP’s favored doomsday approach. “We … [Read more...] about The GOP Suddenly Wants to Defund Law Enforcement After Feds Raid Mar-a-Lago

Sony Hacking Class Actions Set To Become One Big Lawsuit
EXCLUSIVE : If you thought the major fallout from the hacking of Sony Pictures by North Korea late last year and the attempted asphyxiating of The Interview was over, the federal courts have something to tell you. Earlier this week, all of the plaintiffs in the seven class action lawsuits filed against the studio over the massive leaking of personal information such as Social Security numbers and alleged inadequate cyber protection have asked Judge R. Gary Klausne to consolidate their cases. “Consolidating the cases will be the most efficient and effective way of litigating the claims on behalf of the proposed class,” say the plaintiffs in the January 12 motion for one big Sony Data Breach Litigation case ( read it here ). And Sony is cool with that – to a degree. “While SPE does not oppose Plaintiffs’ assertion that these cases ‘involve a common question of law or fact’ for purposes of consolidation, SPE disputes that any of these actions can be prosecuted on a … [Read more...] about Sony Hacking Class Actions Set To Become One Big Lawsuit
Netflix’s Ted Sarandos Eyes 20 Original Series A Year, Rips Theater Owners Again – NATPE
As Netflix continues to expand internationally, Ted Sarandos said he’s got sights on offering as many as 20 original scripted series per year as he sat in conversation with Netflix-friendly creators Vince Gilligan ( Breaking Bad ) and Mitch Hurwitz ( Arrested Development ) on Wednesday at NATPE . “I think we can launch — successfully, high quality — around 20 original scripted shows a year, which means every 2 1/2 to three weeks you’re launching a new season or a new show on Netflix meant to be for really diverse tastes all around the world,” he said. The question came in reference to Netflix’s recent original series Marco Polo , a $90 million production that drew mixed reviews but, he said, played extremely well overseas. “The launch and completion rates were comparable with Orange Is The New Black and House Of Cards , and more than that it’s happening around the world at the same time,” Sarandos said. “The season 2 pickup was based on that performance.” … [Read more...] about Netflix’s Ted Sarandos Eyes 20 Original Series A Year, Rips Theater Owners Again – NATPE
Sony Attack: Studio Hit With First Class Action By Ex-Employees
Less than a month after being ripped open by a massive hacking, Sony Pictures has now been slapped by former employees with the first of what could be many class action suits. “An epic nightmare, much better suited to a cinematic thriller than to real life, is unfolding in slow motion for Sony’s current and former employees,” says the December 15 complaint by Michael Corona and Christina Mathis. The 45-page filing ( read it here ) in federal court in California seeks class action certification for all past and present Sony U.S. employees with California and Virginia subclasses, jury trial and unspecified “appropriate relief, including any actual and statutory damages, restitution and disgorgement.” With personal information, leaked films, executive emails and other corporate entrails coming out in waves since the initial hack on November 24, a lawsuit like this hasn’t been entirely unexpected as questions of the studio’s liability are in play. The plaintiffs isolated Sony’s … [Read more...] about Sony Attack: Studio Hit With First Class Action By Ex-Employees
‘The Interview’ Headed To Netflix As VOD Sales Pass $40M – Update
UPDATE: 1:15 PM: Add Netflix to the list of places that will stream The Interview . The company said in revealing its stellar Q4 earnings today that the Sony Pictures comedy will be available in the U.S. and Canada beginning this Saturday, 30 days after it was in theaters. The move was widely expected, even though Netflix chief content officer Ted Sarandos mostly sidestepped questions about the movie during his TCA session January 7 . “I’m not going to talk about The Interview right now,” was the closest thing to an answer reporters got from him. Later off the stage, Sarandos said he was still hoping to bring the controversial pic to his streaming service. “People want to see the movie and we want to be able to deliver the movie,” he said. PREVIOUS, 9:34 AM: The latest tally is in for Sony’s The Interview . Sony Neglect Of “Basic Safeguards” Enabled Hack Attack: Fortune
Sony brass might be licking their wounds today, or trying keep their blood from boiling, after reading Fortune’s new cover story about last year’s cyber attacks. The magazine published a lengthy piece by Peter Elkind — which includes material from private emails stolen and made public by cyber attackers –that surmises that Sony was so focused on cost cutting that it “failed to employ several basic safeguards” to protect its network and “didn’t put up much of a fight” once hackers breached its system. Sony Pictures execs and others also neglected warnings that a fictional depiction of an assassination of North Korean leader Kim Jong-un in the studio’s comedy The Interview might invite a hack attack. Fortune also paints an unflattering picture of Sony Pictures, describing it as “a deeply unhappy place, beset by pressures over disappointing profits, cost cutting and layoffs, the scorn of an activist investor, and tribal infighting.” The article doesn’t really … [Read more...] about Sony Neglect Of “Basic Safeguards” Enabled Hack Attack: Fortune
