The Rope: The Forgotten History of Segregated Rock & Roll Concerts

· February 22, 2021 ·

A version of this story was originally published in November 2017 and has since been updated. One night in the late 1950s, the Flamingos ’ bus pulled up to a concert hall in Birmingham, Alabama, and a row of 30 to 50 police officers holding rifles and billy clubs was waiting for them. The cops escorted the six-member doo-wop group, famous for “I Only Have Eyes for You” and “The Ladder of Love,” to its dressing room and gave strict instructions: As black performers, they were to make eye contact with only the black fans, who were confined to the balcony, and not with whites on the floor. “It was ridiculous,” recalls Terry Johnson , a member of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame–inducted group. “The cops were up there making sure we did not look at any white person. It was a rule when we came in: ‘I don’t want to see any of you darkies looking at the white women out there. If you do, your ass is mine.’ Cruel things like that.” The Flamingos, like all African American performers … [Read more...] about The Rope: The Forgotten History of Segregated Rock & Roll Concerts

Hear Offspring’s ‘Let the Bad Times Roll,’ From First Album in Nine Years

· February 24, 2021 ·

The Offspring return to their signature mix of guileless pop-punk and forked-tongue irony on “Let the Bad Times Roll,” the title track off their upcoming record, which will be their first in nearly a decade. Although the title puns off the Cars, the track starts off sounding a bit more like the Police, as Dexter Holland mewls the song title over acoustic guitar before the band settles into a hard rock groove and he sings to his lover, “Let me know what you decide, apathy or suicide,” as he sardonically tries to make the relationship work. The full album is due out on April 16th. “I feel like we’re in a unique period in history where instead of our world leaders saying ‘we’re doing our best’ it’s more like they’re saying ‘fuck it’ and it’s really scary,” Holland said of the song in a statement. “Folks are saying, if it’s all going to hell, we might as well make the most out of it, or at least go out swinging,” guitarist Noodles added. “‘Let the Bad Times Roll!'” As with the … [Read more...] about Hear Offspring’s ‘Let the Bad Times Roll,’ From First Album in Nine Years

Original Justice League Plans Included a Romance Between Batman & Lois Lane

· February 23, 2021 ·

In a very recent interview Zack and Debroah Snyder gave to Vanity Fair, many unknown details were revealed that the public never knew about the production of Zack Snyder's Justice League . The interview even disclosed how the Snyder Cut was deeply personal to the Snyders, and even shed some light on the aggressive intrusion of WB executives on Snyder's sets. Amidst those confessions and personal comments from the Snyders, Zack also said a few things about his take on the DCEU, which makes his vision more allegorical to DC fandom and proves his mantle as a creative filmmaker. One of those details included a subplot that Zack wanted to include in his original plan for Justice League . And that was a love story between Lois Lane and Bruce Wayne. No, it isn't a typo. There was a planned relationship arc between Bruce and Lois in Justice League , which though sound ridiculous given Lois and Clark's history, the way Zack explains it, it seems only logical. More interestingly, the … [Read more...] about Original Justice League Plans Included a Romance Between Batman & Lois Lane
