The Emancipation of Steven Tyler

January 17, 2012 by www.rollingstone.com

F or a moment, Steven Tyler almost runs out of words. He’s standing too close to the edge of a Laurel Canyon cliff, exulting in the panorama of Los Angeles at his feet, the city’s sprawl giving way to white-capped mountains on the horizon. Off to his left, past green hills, a gang of clouds has singled out the HOLLYWOOD sign for a blast of rain. A sharp wind ruffles Tyler’s hair as he takes it all in. A deep breath of cool air, then he resumes the monologue that’s been running since he learned to speak – or, as he puts it, since he was “vaccinated with a phonograph needle.” “It’s all magical,” Tyler says in his excited rasp, pointing out the storm. “Hollywood is crying, because the Oscars are happening tomorrow night – it’s sad to see the year go, but it’s also crying tears of joy, because it’s all going to start all over again.” Tyler means this stuff, all of it, and he can make you buy into it too. He’s in a manic, mystical state of awe and gratitude these days, practically … [Read more...] about The Emancipation of Steven Tyler

Aerosmith’s Amazing Road Back

April 5, 1990 by www.rollingstone.com

S teven Tyler enters the hotel room and strips down to his black cracker – a sort of G-string. It’s three in the morning – four hours after Aerosmith wrapped up a show before 37,000 fans at Toronto’s Skydome – and the band’s hyperactive lead singer is back at the Four Seasons Hotel ready to do a little more performing. After contorting himself on the room’s double bed for a few minutes, he finally achieves his desired position: bound and gagged with an attractive female friend of the band’s riding him bareback. Someone turns on a video camera to record the moment for posterity. Tyler’s famous big lips – which rival Mick Jagger ‘s or even Carly Simon ‘s – break into a wide Cheshire-cat grin. Then suddenly his expression turns more serious, and he begins a series of muffled orgasmic squeals. This is, in all likelihood, not the first time that the forty-two-year-old Tyler has found himself in this sort of situation. In fact, to hear Tyler and the other members of Aerosmith … [Read more...] about Aerosmith’s Amazing Road Back

‘Stranger Things’ Season 4 Is Back — Bigger, Bloodier and More Bloated Than Ever

May 24, 2022 by www.rollingstone.com

Stranger Things is one of Netflix’s defining series. But as the Eighties horror pastiche returns this week after a nearly three-year absence, the show and the streamer seem to be going in opposite directions. Netflix is contracting; Stranger Things is expanding. It’s been a rough spring for Netflix. Subscriber growth has slowed, and actual subscriber losses are predicted later this year, which sent the streaming giant’s stock price stumbling. Employees have been laid off, and there’s a plan for a cheaper ad-supported subscription tier later this year to staunch the bleeding. There have been other belt-tightening measures in recent years, particularly when it comes to how long shows are allowed to run, and how quickly cancellations are handed down. Stranger Things , though, just keeps getting bigger. This delayed fourth season has been split into two chunks: seven episodes now, two more in July. The cast is bigger — both in numbers, and in height, where Finn Wolfhard’s Mike … [Read more...] about ‘Stranger Things’ Season 4 Is Back — Bigger, Bloodier and More Bloated Than Ever

In addition to Stars at Noon , Alwyn also stars in the BBC Three/Hulu series Conversations with Friends directed by Lenny Abrahamson and based on the Sally Rooney novel, which premiered May 15. DEADLINE: How did you get involved with Stars at Noon ? JOE ALWYN : I got involved pretty late in the game. I was sent the script on literally a Friday morning to read with an email saying Claire would like to Zoom me that afternoon. “If you’re interested, and if they want you, then you’ll be flying to Panama. Cannes Review: Jean-Pierre & Luc Dardenne’s ‘Tori And Lokita’

May 24, 2022 by deadline.com

You can pretty much bet that whenever the Dardenne brothers show up with a new film in Cannes , it will walk away with some sort of prize. That has been the case since 1999 when their first competition film, Rosetta, swooped in at the last minute and won the Palme d’Or and Best Actress. They won a second Palme in 2005 for The Child, the Grand Jury Prize in 2011 for Kid with a Bike, Screenplay in 2008 for Lorna’s Silence and Director in 2019 for Young Ahmed. No matter what the jury, the Dardennes continue to impress, yet none of their films has brought them an Oscar nomination. Their 2011 pic Two Days, One Night did get a surprise Best Actress nomination for Marion Cotillard, but that has been it. The Belgian brothers are a good bet to be in the Cannes winners circle again this year with Tori and Lokita , an irresistible and deeply affecting tale of two West African immigrant adolescents trying to pass themselves off as brother and sister in order to get … [Read more...] about Cannes Review: Jean-Pierre & Luc Dardenne’s ‘Tori And Lokita’
