LIV Golf , a professional tour that launched its challenge to the PGA Tour last year with $2 billion in backing from Saudi Arabia ’s Public Investment Fund, has finally landed a U.S. TV deal. The new outfit signed a multi-year pact with the CW , helping the broadcast network move closer toward its goal of delivering more live programming amid a broader overhaul. Nexstar Media Group acquired majority control of the CW last year, with former 50-50 partners Paramount Global and Warner Bros Discovery each retaining 12.5% stakes. The exclusive rights deal starts this year. Starting next month, the CW will air 14 of the tour’s events on weekends in 2023 and will stream them live on the CW app, including on Fridays. (LIV’s name is a nod to the tour’s 54-hole setup, with action happening Friday through Sunday, as opposed to the PGA Tour’s 72-hole format.) Financial terms were not disclosed, but the rights process was hampered by the PGA’s ties with major media companies like … [Read more...] about Saudi-Backed LIV Golf, After Search For U.S. TV Partner, Sets Multi-Year Deal With The CW

Heather Olander Set To Land Top Unscripted Job At The CW
EXCLUSIVE : The CW has seemingly found its unscripted chief. It comes after Deadline revealed that the Nexstar-owned company was in the hunt for an alternative chief to work alongside recently appointed President of Entertainment Brad Schwartz. Olander, who could start as soon as next month, will have an interesting job on her hands as the network is set to increase the amount of unscripted content it airs as it looks to program more cost-effectively. Seth Rogen Blasts The CW At The Critics Choice Awards: ‘We’re On Your Least Favorite Network’
Seth Rogen took the stage at the Critics Choice Awards to present the winner of Best Comedy Series. However, the comedic actor had some notes for the organizers of the ceremony and proceeded to put the CW , the network airing the event, on blast. Rogen said that it was his first time at the Critics Choice Awards and questioned if they “always give two awards out at the same time.” The actor was referring to the Supporting Actor/Actress category and had a bone to pick with the network. “That was weird,” he noted. “Why do they do that? Are we crunched for time? Get another hour! It can’t be that expensive. You know how I know that? This show airs at 4 p.m. on the CW. That cannot be pricey… timeslot, from my understanding of how this all works.” RELATED: Critics Choice Awards Photos: Live From The Red Carpet and Gala Ceremony Rogen continued roasting the network noting that they had no nominations at the event adding, “I’m not saying the CW is bad. Critics Choice Awards Broadcast Draws Record Low Ratings On The CW
The Critics Choice Awards aired Sunday night without much fanfare. The CW ’s broadcast of the 28th annual ceremony drew just 900,000 viewers, according to early Nielsen numbers. That’s a slight dip from last year when the ceremony, which was simulcast across The CW and TNT, took home an audience of 1.1M. TNT didn’t simulcast the ceremony this year, so technically The CW’s audience is higher than it was a year ago even though overall viewership declined. The dip in audience falls in line with every other awards show telecast losing viewers over the past few years. On Tuesday, NBC’s broadcast of the Golden Globes brought in the lowest ratings ever for the ceremony. Over the course of the three-hour Critics Choice broadcast, A24’s Everything Everywhere All at Once won Best Picture, Brendan Fraser won Best Actor for A24’s The Whale , and Cate Blanchett took Best Actress for Focus Features’ Tár . Netflix Q4 Report To Kick Off Year Of Streaming Scrutiny As Hollywood And Wall Street Try To See If The Math Can Work
Netflix , after pulling itself out of a grueling series of setbacks in the first part of 2022, will face another test Thursday afternoon when it reports fourth quarter financial results. In addition to kicking off quarterly earnings season for media and entertainment companies, the report will usher in a year of increased scrutiny for the streaming business. Having moved mountains (and billions of dollars) to try to compete with Netflix after years of letting it run away with the streaming game, media companies are still very early in their direct-to-consumer orientation process. “Rather than being the new sliced bread, investors and executives have accepted that streaming is, in fact, not a good business – at least not compared to what came before,” MoffettNathanson analyst Robert Fishman wrote in a note to clients this week. “But that pre-streaming era is now long gone and not coming back. If streaming is a mediocre business, so what? We are in a streaming age now.” … [Read more...] about Netflix Q4 Report To Kick Off Year Of Streaming Scrutiny As Hollywood And Wall Street Try To See If The Math Can Work
