Writer-director James Gray has been to the Cannes Film Festival in competition on four previous occasions with We Own the Night, The Yards, The Immigrant and Two Lovers but has yet to walk away with a prize. Maybe the fifth time will be the charm? It certainly would be deserving as Gray comes back to his beloved New York City roots with the highly autobiographical and intriguingly titled Armageddon Time . Lest you think that with that title this is more akin to his previous film, the Brad Pitt-starring sci-fi Ad Astra, think again. It couldn’t be farther apart and reps a return to his more frequent thoughtful character-driven family drama explorations rather than space, though that figures in at least one way. With Ad Astra and the exceptional and haunting jungle epic The Lost City of Z ( my favorite of all his films and one of the best of any kind this century), Gray had drifted from the films that brought him to Cannes. But he is back in familiar territory, … [Read more...] about Cannes Review: Director James Gray’s ‘Armageddon Time’

‘Armageddon Time’ Cannes Premiere: James Gray Chokes Up During Emotional Speech After Standing Ovation
James Gray returned to Cannes for the fifth time with what was a personal story inspired by his childhood during 1980s Queens, NY, and the premiere tonight was nothing but emotional. The first screening of Focus Features’ Armageddon Time drew a five-minute standing ovation, the pinnacle of which was Gray addressing the audience. “This is very emotional — it’s my story in a way and you guys shared it with me,” said Gray at which point he began to choke up. “We finished the film last Saturday in a complete panic,” he continued. “You are the very first people on Planet Earth to see it. I’m grateful to each and every one of you. I love you all, and I hope I come back here sometime because it is the church of cinema.” Stars Anne Hathaway and Jeremy Strong appeared moved, as did the pic’s younger stars Jaylin Webb and Banks Repeta, who were transfixed by the enormous and continued applause in the Palais Theatre. Armageddon Time follows a young, artistic Jewish … [Read more...] about ‘Armageddon Time’ Cannes Premiere: James Gray Chokes Up During Emotional Speech After Standing Ovation

Jimmy Wilsey’s Guitar Helped Make Chris Isaak’s ‘Wicked Game’ a Smash. But Wilsey Was Never the Same After
As Lizzo’s “Truth Hurts” recently demonstrated, sometimes it takes a while for a song to catch on and become a hit. Lizzo’s track exploded two years after release, and something similar happened over 30 years ago with Chris Isaak ’s “Wicked Game.” When Isaak’s Heart Shaped World was initially rolled out in 1989, it didn’t make much of an impact. Then, with an assist from director David Lynch, “Wicked Game” caught on and got released as a single in late 1990. Finally, in 1991, the song broke into the Top 10. That was all good news for Isaak, who finally became the star everyone had predicted years before. But it was a mixed blessing for Isaak’s lead guitarist, James Calvin Wilsey , who came up with the swoony guitar lick that ran throughout the Isaak-written song. After a tenure in the San Francisco punk band the Avengers, Wilsey and Isaak formed a rockabilly band, Silvertone, in 1980; by 1985 Isaak was the frontman and Silvertone became the name for his backup group, which … [Read more...] about Jimmy Wilsey’s Guitar Helped Make Chris Isaak’s ‘Wicked Game’ a Smash. CPAC Europe Is a Safe Space for Authoritarians — and the Republicans Who Love Them
BUDAPEST, Hungary — European and American conservatives descended on this city Thursday morning to bemoan the supposed ‘suicide’ of Western civilization. The impending cultural death was blamed on a variety of causes, including immigrants who were “replacing” native-born workers; communists and “progressivists” pushing “gender madness”; and liberal democracy, which was creating a new “civic religion” out of the rights of man. Speakers, ranging from the CEO of Parler to the Prime Minister of Hungary, railed against the ‘woke’ media and the “unified troops of the international left” during a series of programming blocs with titles like “Western Civilization Under Attack,” “In God We Trust,” and “The Culture Wars in the Media.” It was the opening day of CPAC Hungary, the first European edition of the American Conservative Union’s flagship confab, and dark clouds were forming over Hungary. “James Burnham said that civilization dies only by suicide. I’m afraid that our lack of … [Read more...] about CPAC Europe Is a Safe Space for Authoritarians — and the Republicans Who Love Them
‘Atlanta’s Zazie Beetz On Tonight’s Ravenous Season 3 Finale, The “Homecoming” Of A Final Season & Saying Goodbye
SPOILER ALERT: This article contains details of tonight’s Season 3 finale of FX ’s Atlanta “We wanted to end this season or end that episode with the feeling of some things have been addressed, but not necessarily solved,” says Zazie Beetz of tonight’s very Parisian finale of Atlanta ’s penultimate season. “I think in Season 4, there’s a continuation of identity searching,” says the actress who plays Van of the Donald Glover , Brian Tyree Henry and LaKeith Stansfield co-starring FX series. “That is a lifelong journey I think, and it takes on a bit of another context.” A delicate weave of whispers of 1960’s Breathless , 1993’s Killing Zoe , 2016’s Raw and more than a dollop or two of 2001’s Amélie , literally and figuratively, the Glover helmed and Stefani Robinson penned “Tarrare” was a feast of a finale for the March 24 premiering third season. With a paid “piss kink,” cooked human hands, a “local” POV of Paris, a debauched Alexander Skarsgård as … [Read more...] about ‘Atlanta’s Zazie Beetz On Tonight’s Ravenous Season 3 Finale, The “Homecoming” Of A Final Season & Saying Goodbye
Falklands War Drama Series In Works From UK & Argentinian Creative Team, Paul Telegdy, Lone Wolf & Infinity Hill
The Islands , a 10-episode drama series, is in the works from BBC alum Stephen McDonogh’s Lone Wolf Pictures, Axel Kuschevatzky, Phin Glynn and Cindy Teperman’s Infinity Hill as well as The Whole Spiel, the company launched last year by former NBC Entertainment Chairman Paul Telegdy and his cousin, Stefan Telegdy. The series, which is being shopped to networks and streamers, tells the story of the Falklands-Malvinas War of 1982 from the point of view of the people who were there and with the involvement of writers and filmmakers from both UK and Argentina. Writing is already underway, with Argentine film and TV writer Sebastian Rotstein ( El Presidente Season 2, Morir de Amor ) on board. The Islands is not a story of failed diplomacy or geo-politics — an angle recently explored on The Crown — but rather an epic portrayal of the brutal realities they brought to a group of extraordinary human beings in a geography that is as bafflingly remote as it is … [Read more...] about Falklands War Drama Series In Works From UK & Argentinian Creative Team, Paul Telegdy, Lone Wolf & Infinity Hill

Cannes Review: Lola Quivoron’s ‘Rodeo’
Rodeo , Lola Quivoron ’s vibrant and impressively funky fiction debut, ambitiously attempts to put a lot of heart into a gang movie that mutates quietly and organically into a heist thriller but doesn’t know quite how to fuse these strands into a satisfying finale. Though it promises all the elements of a cult crossover, and comes tantalizingly close to delivering, the Un Certain Regard title’s destination is most likely the festival circuit, where it will certainly stand out as a very different kind of rites-of-passage movie. Newcomer Julie Ledru stars as Julia, who lives on and off in social housing with her brother and mother. Julia’s relationship with her mother is fraught and on the brink of collapsing altogether; she has a job, but her attendance is sketchy. The only thing that she is passionate about is motocross, and since it’s a hobby she can’t afford, she poses as a buyer on Craigslist-style websites and hoodwinks the owners into letting her take a test drive. … [Read more...] about Cannes Review: Lola Quivoron’s ‘Rodeo’
