PBA wins court order to block NYPD from releasing police disciplinary records
The union representing rank-and-file police officers won a court order Wednesday to temporarily block the NYPD from releasing information on disciplinary proceedings. The order came one day after the Patrolmen’s Benevolent Association sued to permanently prevent Police Commissioner James O’Neill from posting summaries online of allegations against cops and how they were penalized, without mentioning them by name. The NYPD previously kept disciplinary proceedings secret, but did an about-face last month. The major change in policy was first reported by the Daily News. Police were planning to release the first batch of redacted disciplinary cases as soon as Monday, according to the PBA.
