Congress leader Navjot Singh Sidhu has been sentenced to one-year jail term in a 34-year-old (1988) road rage case, where he was earlier let off with a mere Rs 1,000 fine. The cricketer-politician, who was replaced by Archana Puran Singh in The Kapil Sharma Show , has to surrender before a court to serve a one-year rigorous imprisonment in a three-decade old road rage case, in which a person had died. However, Sidhu has the option of challenging the order. Soon after the verdict by Supreme Court, Sidhu took to Twitter and wrote, "Will submit to the majesty of law ...." According to News18 report, the victim's family had filed a review petition seeking punishment for an offence of more serious category than causing hurt, leading to enhancement of punishment. However, Sidhu had urged Supreme Court not to punish him with a jail term. As per the report, senior advocate AM Singhvi, appearing for Sidhu, told the bench during the arguments, "It is an … [Read more...] about Navjot Singh Sidhu Gets One-Year Jail Term In 34-Year-Old Road Rage Case

On the Road With Bob Dylan, Joan Baez and the Rolling Thunder Revue
B ackstage at the Rolling Thunder Revue , Allen Ginsberg (who has just dedicated his book of First Blues to “Minstrel Guruji Bob Dylan “) asks the convener of these revels, these winds of the old days, “Are you getting any pleasure out of this, Bob?” The convener, who can use words as if they were fun-house mirrors when he’s pressed, fingers his gray cowboy hat and looks at the poet. The first he had ever heard of Allen Ginsberg and the kind of people he hung out with was in Time around 1958 while he was still a kid in Minnesota. (“I’m Allen Ginsberg and I’m crazy.” “My name is Peter Orlovsky and I’m crazy as a daisy.” “My name is Gregory Corso and I’m not crazy at all.” That had broken up the kid in Minnesota.) Now, here on the road with this hooting, rocking carnival of time present and time past, both perhaps present in time future, is Allen, who has survived serene and curious, in a business suit. “Pleasure?” Dylan finds the word without taste, without … [Read more...] about On the Road With Bob Dylan, Joan Baez and the Rolling Thunder Revue
Jimmy Wilsey’s Guitar Helped Make Chris Isaak’s ‘Wicked Game’ a Smash. But Wilsey Was Never the Same After
As Lizzo’s “Truth Hurts” recently demonstrated, sometimes it takes a while for a song to catch on and become a hit. Lizzo’s track exploded two years after release, and something similar happened over 30 years ago with Chris Isaak ’s “Wicked Game.” When Isaak’s Heart Shaped World was initially rolled out in 1989, it didn’t make much of an impact. Then, with an assist from director David Lynch, “Wicked Game” caught on and got released as a single in late 1990. Finally, in 1991, the song broke into the Top 10. That was all good news for Isaak, who finally became the star everyone had predicted years before. But it was a mixed blessing for Isaak’s lead guitarist, James Calvin Wilsey , who came up with the swoony guitar lick that ran throughout the Isaak-written song. After a tenure in the San Francisco punk band the Avengers, Wilsey and Isaak formed a rockabilly band, Silvertone, in 1980; by 1985 Isaak was the frontman and Silvertone became the name for his backup group, which … [Read more...] about Jimmy Wilsey’s Guitar Helped Make Chris Isaak’s ‘Wicked Game’ a Smash. Election-Denying Congressman Led Capitol Tour Day Before Insurrection, Jan. 6 Committee Says
Rep. Barry Loudermilk (R-Ga.) led a tour of the U.S. Capitol the day before the Jan. 6 , 2021 insurrection, Politico reported Thursday, citing a letter from the House Jan. 6 committee to the Republican congressman who voted to overturn the 2020 election results. “Public reporting and witness accounts indicate some individuals and groups engaged in efforts to gather information about the layout of the U.S. Capitol, as well as the House and Senate office buildings, in advance of January 6, 2021,” committee officials wrote in the letter , saying video footage of the tour “raises questions.” The letter notes that GOP members of the House Administration Committee — which Loudermilk sits on — had reviewed security footage from Jan. 5 and claimed that there were “no tours, no large groups, no one with MAGA hats on.” One week after the insurrection, which caused about $1.5 million in property damage to the Capitol, nearly three dozen congressional Democrats wrote to the … [Read more...] about Election-Denying Congressman Led Capitol Tour Day Before Insurrection, Jan. 6 Committee Says
The Trump Administration Did a Historically Terrible Job With the 2020 Census
The 2020 census undercounted populations in six states and overcounted populations in eight, according to a U.S. Census Bureau report published Thursday. The results of the once-per-decade census form the basis for the number of House members and Electoral College votes per state, the redistricting of state legislative maps, and how much federal funding gets allocated for schools, hospitals, and public works, as well as for programs like Medicaid and grants for community mental-health services. According to the report, the states with the most significant undercount rates were Arkansas (5.04 percent), Florida (3.48 percent), Illinois (1.97 percent), Mississippi (4.11 percent), Tennessee (4.78 percent), and Texas (1.92 percent). States whose populations were overcounted were Hawaii, which had the highest rate with 6.79 percent, followed in order by Delaware, Rhode Island, Minnesota, New York, Utah, Massachusetts, and Ohio. The 2010 census, by contrast, did not have any … [Read more...] about The Trump Administration Did a Historically Terrible Job With the 2020 Census
