Conan Gray stopped by The Tonight Show to showcase his single, “Disaster.” The singer transformed the late-night show stage into a literal disaster, with roses strewn alongside fallen luggage and a toppled moped. Gray also released a cinematic music video for the track today alongside his sophomore LP Superache , out now via Republic Records. The album is a follow-up to his 2020 debut, Kid Krow. Gray recently spoke with Rolling Stone about the new album, explaining that it was inspired by a romantic failure. “Writing this album was miserable, and that’s why it ended up being a super-accurate depiction of my life,” he said. “It felt like scraping my ribs of any last bits of meat.” “With Kid Krow , I was very much like, ‘Hi, I am Conan, nice to meet you. These are some things that happened. My heart has been broken before, when I was a teenager,’” he added. “But then with this album, it’s like, ‘I had a really bad childhood. I’m in a lot of pain.'” To support … [Read more...] about Conan Gray Survives a Crash With ‘Disaster’ Performance on ‘Fallon’

Conan Gray Has Many Many Feelings — And Manages Them Quite Impressively on ‘Superache’
Calling an album Superache is about as subtle as slapping a “Feelings Ahead” sign on its cover, but Conan Gray reached the vanguard of twentysomething pop by always putting his emotions right up front. On his second album, the 23-year-old YouTuber turned pop star reveals himself to be an astute observer of the human condition, recounting everyday scenes and highlighting those split-second details in interactions that can make a warm rapport between two people transform into permafrost. Gray has a lithe voice that simultaneously possesses the intensity of Shawn Mendes and the sweetness of Carly Rae Jepsen, a potent combination that adds both anguish and romanticism to his music. Some of the most gripping songs on Superache find Gray almost dispassionately describing his own life’s ups and downs before lowering the boom. On the longing “Footnote,” Gray recounts moments when he and someone he’s close to were mistaken for a couple, his observations (“They think we’re a … [Read more...] about Conan Gray Has Many Many Feelings — And Manages Them Quite Impressively on ‘Superache’
Pranks, Paranoia and Peter Pan: John Lee on Making ‘False Positive’
This piece originally appeared as part of Rolling Stone ’s annual Hot List, in the July/August issue of the magazine. When John Lee was working at his first job — a magic store in the small Bay Area town of Castroville, California — there was a trick he’d always play. “It’s a classic move called the French Drop,” the 49-year-old filmmaker says, as he angles his laptop’s camera downward. He picks up a quarter, slides it into his other hand, and closes his palm; when he opens his fist, there’s no coin there. “‘Oh, look, it stayed in this hand, haha!’” The teenage Lee wouldn’t perform the gag for regular customers, however; he’d wait until professional magicians came into the shop and then do the antiquated Magic 101 move. The older men would wearily sigh, roll their eyes, and gesture toward the first hand… at which point Lee would open his fist and present their coins. “I loved it, because they would just seethe, ” he says, cracking up at the memory. “They thought they caught … [Read more...] about Pranks, Paranoia and Peter Pan: John Lee on Making ‘False Positive’
