Getty Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson is a trailblazer -- so says the Hollywood Critics Association that labeled him as such -- but D.J. says the real trailblazer was his pops. Johnson accepted the HCA's Trailblazer Award Friday night via Zoom, of course, and he got pretty emotional. Dwayne says he felt super lucky to be in a position of privilege where he could make people feel good. He's done that in a big way, working with the Make-A-Wish Foundation for a long, long time. He was also honored for the donations he's made to frontline workers and first responders. The former wrestling champ dedicated the award to his dad, WWE Hall of Famer Rocky Johnson, who passed away a year ago at age 75. Dwayne called his dad a real trailblazer, and then went on to describe their relationship as "complicated" -- "Father and son, tough love, tough love." Dwayne says his dad did all he could do to make people go home feeling happy. Congrats on the award!!! … [Read more...] about Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson Dedicates Trailblazer Award to Dad

Friday Ratings: The ‘Shark Tank’ Juggernaut Swims On To Top Evening’s Demos
ABC ’s Shark Tank continues its Friday night ratings roll, as Mark Cuban, Kevin O’Leary, Lori Greiner, Robert Herjavec and Daymond John brought in a solid 0.7 to lead the Friday night demo wars. In this episode, the Sharks considered the pitches from a Philadelphia chef’s plan for healthier meals, a Delaware woman’s stress-relief tools, an Iowa team’s idea for keeping drinks cool, and a Minnesota woman’s no-fuss solution to keep babies busy and entertained. We also had an update on how a hairstyling company benefits from Mark Cuban’s wisdom. That lead-in saw ABC’s 20/20 also score big, bringing in an 0.6 with its examination of a missing Myrtle Beach, SC woman ensnared in a love triangle. At CBS , the crime drama lineup pulled in some solid numbers and led the overall network ratings with a lineup of all-new episodes. MacGyver led off with an 0.4 and 4.36 million viewers. Then at 9, Magnum P.I. ticked up to 0.5 and 5.38 million viewers. … [Read more...] about Friday Ratings: The ‘Shark Tank’ Juggernaut Swims On To Top Evening’s Demos
‘Raya And The Last Dragon’ Debuting To $8M As Pic Hits Disney+ & NYC Reopens: Why The Industry Is Greatly Concerned
Saturday AM Update: Updated with NYC B.O. data Even with three new wide releases at this weekend’s box office, and New York City finally reopening, numbers still aren’t at pre-pandemic levels, but there’s a lot of drama going on. Let’s start with Disney ’s theatrical day and date Disney+ release of animated pic Raya and the Last Dragon which looks to be leading the weekend with a studio-reported $2.5M Friday and an industry weekend estimate of $8.3M at 2,045 theaters. These numbers are slightly less than the $3M Friday and $9M-$10M we were hearing about, and they’re definitely less than the $14.1M that Warner Bros’ same day HBO Max release of Tom & Jerry posted last weekend. Raya ‘s opening weekend is also less than Croods: A New Age ‘s 3-day opening over its Thanksgiving stretch which posted $9.7M. And that’s definitely because Disney did not reach a deal with No. 3 chain Cinemark, as we first told you (thus, losing around 250 bookings), Harkins, and … [Read more...] about ‘Raya And The Last Dragon’ Debuting To $8M As Pic Hits Disney+ & NYC Reopens: Why The Industry Is Greatly Concerned
New York DMA Box Office Booms 614% On Friday In Wake Of NYC Cinemas Reopening
EXCLUSIVE: The New York DMA exploded last night at the box office with NYC theaters returning after a 50 1/2 week pandemic closure with an estimated gross of $307K, +614% from last Friday according to B.O. sources. I’m also told that the NY DMA was easily the No. 1 market in the country last night, followed by Salt Lake City, Dallas, Phoenix, Chicago, Houston, Denver, Minneapolis, Detroit and Montreal. The New York DMA includes movie theaters in Connecticut, New Jersey, Westchester County, Long Island, and also the five boroughs. Last Friday, the DMA only grossed $43K from 60 locations. Last night’s $307K clearly comes from the additional NYC openings. All movie theaters in NYC are operating at 25% capacity restrictions. AMC Boss Adam Aron went on CNBC yesterday to celebrate the reopening of NYC theaters, says 13 of the chain’s locations in NYC were reopening, for a total of 29 in the Empire state. AMC Empire 25 on 42nd Street and its Lincoln Square venue have … [Read more...] about New York DMA Box Office Booms 614% On Friday In Wake Of NYC Cinemas Reopening
Aliens: Fireteam Video Game Trailer Reveals Xenomorphs Vs. Colonial Marines Shoot ‘Em Up
Surprise! We're getting a brand new Alien video game this summer. Cold Iron Studios and 20th Century Games have revealed the first trailer for Aliens: Fireteam . The game will put players in the shoes of a Colonial Marine as they take on Xenomorphs and other extraterrestrial threats with a team of soldiers. The video game trailer is action-packed. This is far more James Cameron's than it is Ridley Scott's original Alien. Instead of slow-build tension and jump scares, this is all-out war against the deadly creatures. We got a great feel for what the game is going to look like and how it is going to put players right in the middle of the action. A synopsis for Aliens: Fireteam has been revealed as well, which reads as follows. RELATED: Alien Comic Trailer Brings Xenomorphs to the Marvel Universe "2202. A mysterious distress call reroutes your Marine Assault Unit to LV-895 in the outer colonies, where deadly Xenomorph legions, hidden corporate secrets, and ancient … [Read more...] about Aliens: Fireteam Video Game Trailer Reveals Xenomorphs Vs.
