D ‘Angelo is a morning person, of sorts. When he’s working in the studio, as was often the case in the 14-year interregnum between 2000’s Voodoo and 2014’s Black Messiah, he quits his all-night recording sessions just in time to greet each day’s sunrise. “I’m definitely on the night shift,” he says, drawing deep on one of a series of Newport cigarettes, not long after midnight in the midtown Manhattan studio where he recorded much of Black Messiah. He’s wearing a denim shirt unbuttoned over a white undershirt, dark jeans and leather boots. Dog tags bearing the names of his three children hang from a chain around his neck. He looks weary, though he woke up not long ago. It’s his first interview since he released one of the most universally acclaimed albums in years, an album that seemed as if it might never come out at all. D’Angelo could well be the most singular, visionary star to emerge from R&B since Prince. His music, stuffed with live instrumentation and harmonic … [Read more...] about The Second Coming of D’Angelo

D’Angelo Electrifies at Triumphant Second Coming Tour Opener
When D’Angelo last visited Oakland in the spring of 2000, he was steaming from the deafening acclaim given to Voodoo , and the impact of his glistening naked torso in the “Untitled (How Does It Feel).” Backed by a troupe that featured drummer Questlove and producer James Poyser, he thrilled a sold-out crowd at the Paramount Theater, but his burgeoning sex symbol status nearly overshadowed a masterful performance. A little over 15 years later, D’Angelo returned to downtown Oakland’s Fox Theater for the first night of his U.S. tour in support of his lionized comeback album, Black Messiah . (Much of the audience arrived late after watching their hometown favorite Golden State Warriors lose a heartbreaker in Game 2 of the NBA Finals, and so they missed an opening set by promising Australian singer-songwriter Meg Mac.) This time, he didn’t strip off his shirt, instead opting for a series of modestly effective costume changes to complement his black T-shirt, pants and boots, like … [Read more...] about D’Angelo Electrifies at Triumphant Second Coming Tour Opener
New Hot Cannes Package: Paul Greengrass Directing Benedict Cumberbatch In Peasant Farmer Revolt Drama ‘The Hood’
EXCLUSIVE : A Cannes Market teeming with strong film packages adds a new one. I’m hearing that buyers will today be getting The Hood , a script by Paul Greengrass that he will direct, with Benedict Cumberbatch starring. The period drama is about the peasant revolt in England, I’m told. Cumberbatch will play a farmer who become the leader in an action drama that is best likened to Braveheart , and Gladiator . Greengrass last directed the Tom Hanks-starrer News of the World , and Cumberbatch is coming off his Best Actor-nominated performance in Power of the Dog . CAA Media Finance and FilmNation are selling this one. Tyler Thompson’s Cross Creek is financing and producing. Thompson and Greggory Goodman are producing. Cross Creek is also producing Melody , the Jeremy Zag-directed animated musical that will star Katy Perry and is being sold here in the Cannes Market . FilmNation adds another plum title to a Cannes roster that includes film packages … [Read more...] about New Hot Cannes Package: Paul Greengrass Directing Benedict Cumberbatch In Peasant Farmer Revolt Drama ‘The Hood’

Cannes Review: Vicky Krieps In ‘Corsage’
It took the Empress Elisabeth’s strongest lady’s maid an hour every morning to lace her stays. The Emperor Franz-Joseph’s wife Sisi, as she was fondly known to the subjects of the Austro-Hungarian empire, was famous for the narrowness of her waist, which reputedly measured 19 and a half inches; the slightest weight gain was a matter of seething public interest. It looks very much as if Vicky Krieps , who brings great complexity to her portrait of the empress in Marie Kreutzer ’s Un Certain Regard title Corsage , shares the imperial measurements. Let’s hope that is just a trick of the camera. So much corsetry — or corsage, the word we hear much used in the royal dressing-rooms of 19th-century Vienna — doesn’t leave much room for little things like ribs. Sisi was a Bavarian princess, given a liberal upbringing by her royal but bohemian parents, who married the emperor (Florian Teichtmeister: superbly restrained) when she was 16 and was on the throne for 44 years. … [Read more...] about Cannes Review: Vicky Krieps In ‘Corsage’
‘Heartstopper’ Renewed For Seasons 2 & 3 By Netflix
Netflix has given buzzy half-hour newcomer Heartstopper , from See-Saw Films, a two-season pickup. Multi-season renewals are rare at the streamer, and the one for Heartstopper is a testament to the coming-of-age romantic comedy-drama checking all the boxes as a Netflix success story. The streamer famously bases its renewal decisions on analyzing shows’ cost vs. performance. Developed and produced out of the U.K., Heartstopper, which Alice Oseman adapted from her graphic novel, has been an OK performer, spending three weeks in Netflix’s weekly global Top 10 rankings of English-language series since its April 22 debut, peaking at No. 5. (It has reached the Netflix Top Ten list in 54 countries.) But the modestly-budgeted British series, featuring young up-and-coming lead cast as well as Olivia Colman as a guest star and Stephe Fry as voiceover, has had a lightning-in-a-bottle outsized cultural impact. It is one of Netflix’s best-reviewed series with 100% on Rotten … [Read more...] about ‘Heartstopper’ Renewed For Seasons 2 & 3 By Netflix

UMI’s Peaceful Soul: ‘I Can Be Whatever I Want to Be’
Like so many people of mixed heritages, Tierra Umi Wilson exists between worlds. The 23-year-old artist — who performs under her middle name, UMI, which means “ocean” in Japanese — was born in Seattle to a Black father and a Japanese mother, and has spent her life negotiating the cultural exchange she embodies. Her 2020 EP Introspection put that interrogation into music as she worked her way through questions of heritage and sexual identity. But while that record was explicitly inward-looking, UMI’s debut album — Forest in the City , out May 27 on RCA — seeks to turn her search outward. The themes are more universal and the sounds more expansive, bouncing from sun-soaked electro R&B on “whatever u like” to moody slow jams like “moonlit room.” It’s as if being at a fulcrum between communities has given UMI the confidence to be something completely different: herself. “Growing up, I didn’t feel Japanese enough, I didn’t feel Black enough, and I didn’t feel me enough, … [Read more...] about UMI’s Peaceful Soul: ‘I Can Be Whatever I Want to Be’
Ozzy Osbourne’s Daughter Aimee Narrowly Escapes Deadly Recording Studio Fire
Aimée Osbourne, who makes dusky electropop music under the name ARO and is Ozzy and Sharon Osbourne’s eldest daughter, escaped a deadly fire that claimed one life at a Hollywood recording studio Thursday night. According to an Instagram post by Sharon Osbourne, she and the producer she was working with both made it out alive. “It is utterly heartbreaking that someone lost their life today in this fire, and we are sending our prayers to this person and their family,” she wrote. Los Angeles Times reported that the two survivors were suffering from smoke inhalation but declined hospitalization. It took 78 firefighters and 51 minutes to extinguish the fire, which broke out shortly before 6 p.m. in an industrial building that houses several recording studios located at 6600 W. Lexington Ave. Because many of the studios had soundproofing, double drywall, and more than the usual amount of insulation, the Times reported, the building held onto the fire, making it difficult … [Read more...] about Ozzy Osbourne’s Daughter Aimee Narrowly Escapes Deadly Recording Studio Fire
ARO’s Chilly, Trance-like ‘House of Lies’ Is a Song You Need to Know
The squirmy synth line that opens “House of Lies,” the latest single from ARO ’s upcoming Vacare Adamare LP, worms its way in slowly. “Picked you like a rose that wasn’t blooming,” sings ARO, “’cause everything I do is of my choosing.” That couplet perfectly sets up her whole perspective — everything she does is on her own terms. Five years have passed since ARO introduced herself with “Raining Gold,” a slow-building, cinematic sliver of electro-pop that builds until it bursts. She got immediate attention at the time, since people figured out ARO is an acronym for her name, Aimée Rachel Osbourne — Ozzy and Sharon Osbourne’s eldest daughter — and she was making music that was nothing like her father’s. Yet despite the attention, she bided her time; Vacare Adamare , her debut, won’t come out until October 30th. “House of Lies,” and her lyrics about setting her own destiny, perfectly sum up her attitude. Beyond the mission statement, there’s an element of mystery to “House … [Read more...] about ARO’s Chilly, Trance-like ‘House of Lies’ Is a Song You Need to Know
