Katniss Retakes No. 1 From China ‘Surprise’; ‘Good Dinosaur’ In 3rd; ‘Sea’ & 007 Round Out Top 5 – Intl Box Office Final
UPDATED, 6:45 PM Monday: The Hunger Games: Mockingjay – Part 2 pulled off a surprise of its own when international box office figures were retallied today. MJ2 reclaimed the top spot following an unexpected two-day “preview” surge by the Chinese title Surprise that appeared to give it the lead over Katniss and company on Sunday. Lionsgate reported that MJ2 grosses rose to $17.4M from Sunday’s estimated $15.4M, enough to put the franchise finale back on top for its fourth consecutive weekend offshore. The shuffle resulted in a short reign for Surprise (aka Surprise You’ll Never Think Of: Journey To The West , or Surprise: Journey To The West ), whose $17M Saturday-Sunday figures from some 35K preview showings (compared to about 25K regular screenings for Point Break ) initially appeared to best all other overseas titles for the weekend. The Surprise maneuver came on the first official weekend of the Chinese box office blackout for new releases. ‘Point Break’s China World Premiere Is First Of Its Kind – Photos
EXCLUSIVE : Earlier tonight local time, Beijing was the host city for the world premiere of Point Break from DMG Entertainment , Alcon Entertainment and Warner Bros . This is the first time that a global launch of a Hollywood title has taken place in the Middle Kingdom. The movie, directed by Ericson Core, is making further history in China when it opens on Friday, a full three weeks ahead of the U.S. That gives it the final non-Mandarin-language slot before the December blackout descends and makes Point Break the first major studio-affiliated motion picture to release there with such an advance on domestic. Penguins Of Madagascar bowed 12 days before the U.S. in 2014 and Iron Man 3 opened in China two days before its Stateside debut in 2013. ‘Point Break’ To Surf Into China Three Weeks Before U.S. Release
EXCLUSIVE : The Point Break remake is about to break new ground. The film from Alcon Entertainment , DMG Entertainment and Warner Bros is headed for an early December release date in China which is somewhat unprecedented on two fronts. On the one hand, while China has approved a bunch of Hollywood movies to open in the Middle Kingdom in November, the following month marks the latest blackout period during which local titles are front and center and studio films are sidelined. Point Break has secured a December 3 release date locally, making it a surprise to others as the last Hollywood movie let in under the wire. Fox’s The Martian has staked out November 25 and Paramount has The SpongeBob Movie on December 1. How ‘Spectre’s China Marketing Hustle Gave Huge Boost To Bond – Intl B.O. Final
FINAL UPDATE : Spectre led the international frame for a third weekend in a row, boosted by a fantastic start in China . That $48.1M gross set records for a 2D film and far outpaced Skyfall ‘s Middle Kingdom debut. Because the Chinese government controls so many variables including release dates and keeps 75% of ticket sales, there is a perception that studios are helpless and can only hope for the best. That’s not really true. In fact, Spectre ‘s record-breaking performance is directly attributable to an aggressive campaign by Sony to market the film in the territory. It is not an accident how strongly Spectre finished its opening weekend, even though the series has traditionally underperformed in the world’s No. 2 market, where Skyfall finished with a China gross of $59M.
