The trophies for the fourth annual Critics’ Choice Documentary Awards were handed out on Sunday with Neon’s Apollo 11 taking Best Documentary Feature. The ceremony took place at BRIC in Brooklyn. Neon was the top winner of the night with the space docu, winning five awards. Their docu The Biggest Little Farm walked away with Best Cinematography and their bee-keeping pic Honeyland won Best First Documentary Feature for Tamara Kotevska and Ljubomir Stefano. The Biggest Little Farm led the pack this year with seven nominations while Apollo 11 (also a Neon title) and the Warner Bros. docu They Shall Not Grow Old each had six. Speaking of the latter, The Shall Not Grow Old‘s Peter Jackson won for Best Director tying with Steven Bognar and Julia Reichert who directed the Netflix docu American Factory. The people have spoken…and they have made their choices. The People’s Choice Awards were handed out tonight on E! and Avengers: Endgame took the award for the Movie of 2019 as well as Action Movie of the year. Netflix’s sci-fi series Stranger Things took home the honor of The Show of 2019 and won Drama Show of the year. Robert Downey Jr. took home the trophy for Male Movie Star while Zendaya took the accolade for Female Movie Star. Meanwhile, Riverdale‘s Cole Sprouse won for Male TV Star while Stranger Things actress Millie Bobby Brown won Female TV Star of the year. Other winners of the evening included Murder Mystery winning Comedy Movie and After for Drama Movie. On the TV side, The Big Bang Theory won for Comedy Show while The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon won for The Nighttime Talk Show and Keeping Up with the Kardashians won for Reality Show of the year. The 2019 E! People’s Choice Awards drew an average of 1.8 million viewers Sunday across the cable networks of NBCUniversal, E!, Bravo, SyFy and USA Network. That was up 9% (+142,000) from last year’s debut of the awards franchise on the four NBCU networks (L+SD). Fueling the rise in viewership was People’s Choice Awards‘ home, E!, where the show averaged 821,000 total viewers, +41% (+239,000) vs. last year. In adults 18-49, the ceremony also was up on E! (337,000, up +12%) while down across all four networks combined (675,000, down -12%). The 41% year-to-year viewership increase is the second among any awards shows this year (behind NFL Network’s 101 Awards, +50%) though both are coming off small bases. The same day that Kanye West released a reflective two-hour interview with Charlamagne the God, he also visited TMZ for a live interview that appeared to be wildly different. The rapper drew tremendous ire for his flippant comments about the history of American slavery. “When you hear about slavery for 400 years: For 400 years, that sounds like choice,” West said. “You was there for 400 years,” he added, seemingly in disbelief, “And it’s all of y’all?” The video of West’s visit to TMZ also contained footage from an encounter with one of the outlet’s employees, Van Lathan, in the newsroom. “Do you feel like I’m thinking free and feeling free?” West asked the crowd.
