‘Notturno’ Is Not Journalism, But Gianfranco Rosi’s Movie Investigates the Heart of the Middle East
Notturno is a film that restricts itself to a vacuum of post-war experience. It allows us glimpses of healing, or attempts at healing, and a plenitude of scenes and shots which, out of context, might seem like nothingness. A mule at the crossroads of a busy intersection at night, say, whose breathing gradually overwhelms the sounds of people and car engines, as if the director were zooming in on the life that quietly persists, unheard, until we’re given the tools to properly hear it. This is another way of saying that Rossi isn’t steeping us in the easy pornography of trauma, here. Rather, he keys in on the surreality of what the people he films experience as everyday life. Sylvester Stallone Becomes Rocky Balboa One More Time
Sylvester Stallone: The training for this was extremely difficult. The things that worked (laughs)... 30 years ago, are a little rusty. I kinda felt like the Tin Man before he got his can of oil. I was very, very stiff. With the help of a handful of Advil every morning... Antonio Tarver hurt his hand sparring with me and I broke my foot. So I'm in a cast, hobbling around the ring. We looked like two mummies. We had to do some scenes in slow motion because it hurt so bad. When we got to Vegas I was really nervous. I had to come down the aisle in front of 9,000 people, I'm not ready at all, and I've got a world champion in there who just knocked out the best pound for pound fighter in the past 10 years. … [Read more...] about Sylvester Stallone Becomes Rocky Balboa One More Time

For Flanigan, the script inspired her to take her very first try at acting. “I remember, back when I first got a chance to read the script, I was immediately drawn to the content, that it revolved around this story about abortion. I already felt passionate enough about that subject to immediately click with it. I just really enjoyed how grounded in reality everything was— the characters felt real to me.” … [Read more...] about ‘Never Rarely Sometimes Always’ Director Eliza Hittman On Telling “Intimate Story” About Reproductive Healthcare In America – Contenders Film
