Sundance Review: Vuk Lungulov-Klotz’s Remarkable Trans Drama ‘Mutt’
Although trans rights are now the subject of a simmering culture war in America and the U.K., that conflict is largely predicated on the increasing visibility of trans women at a time where self-ID is controversially becoming the norm. Stories of trans men, however, tend to go under the radar, and this remarkable New York-set debut from Chilean-Serbian director Vuk Lungulov-Klotz goes some way to redressing that imbalance. Featuring a pitch-perfect performance from Puerto Rican/Greek actor Lío Mehiel, so far mostly known for the Apple show WeCrashed and a number of shorts, U.S. Dramatic Competition entry Mutt feels like an important but — for reasons about to be explained — perhaps interstitial film in the history of LGBTQ+ cinema, being fully cognizant of the fact that it is set and was made in a between-time that reflects the lead character’s existential sense of limbo. Its strength is that it goes for micro over macro. A recent comparison would be Eliza Hittman’s … [Read more...] about Sundance Review: Vuk Lungulov-Klotz’s Remarkable Trans Drama ‘Mutt’
Amy Poehler & Tina Fey Leave The Bar High For Golden Globes Show – Review
Meryl Streep nailed it when she said, in the final seconds of the 72nd Golden Globe Awards telecast: “How much are we going to miss Amy and Tina?” The co-hosts, sparingly but brilliantly deployed throughout NBC ’s three-hour-three-minute telecast, opened the show with a string of zingers connected to the Sony hack, North Korea and The Interview . Fey welcomed “all you despicable, spoiled, minimally talented brats,” referencing (perhaps even defusing) an email between a certain film producer and a certain SPE executive. The were ably assisted by comedienne Margaret Cho, impersonating a North Korean member of the Hollywood Foreign Press Association who was decidedly non-plussed by the event (where are 1,000 children playing the same song on the guitar, she demanded to know. Where’s Dennis Rodman?). They executed several exquisite barbs (I especially loved Poehler’s “ Boyhood proves there are still roles for women over 40—as long as you’re hired before you’re 40,” and … [Read more...] about Amy Poehler & Tina Fey Leave The Bar High For Golden Globes Show – Review
Little Richard Doc’s Lisa Cortés On Rock ‘N’ Roll’s Architect, Sundance Directorial Debut, Mick Jagger & The Culture Wars
Little Richard left this mortal coil in 2020, but tonight the architect of rock’n’roll is coming to shake up the Sundance Film Festival. It contributed to the kinds of music, whether it’s the great gospel music or the rock and roll or the gospel rock and roll.” Double dipping her … [Read more...] about Little Richard Doc’s Lisa Cortés On Rock ‘N’ Roll’s Architect, Sundance Directorial Debut, Mick Jagger & The Culture Wars
