Flippancy aside, this was an excellent day at the office against a squad and a club who fully expect to be in the top flight next season. John Isner draws No. 1 seed at U.S. Men’s Clay Court Championships

U.S. Men's Clay Court Championships with the highest ranking – ninth – of his dozen years on the ATP Tour. He's also coming off his biggest career triumph, a first-ever Masters 1000 title claimed in Miami Sunday. Isner and Jack Sock, the third seed, are two of the five former Clay Courts champions in the field, having won in 2013 and 2015 respectively. Second-seeded Sam Querrey is a two-time runner-up in Houston, most recently losing to Sock in the final. All three are on the U.S. Davis Cup team that's playing Belgium in Nashville this weekend and, with first-round byes, won't be on the court here before Wednesday at the earliest. A fourth American Davis Cupper, Steve Johnson, will be back trying to defend the title he won last spring.
