IN THE EARLY 1960s, A MILITARY career was the expected route for the son of an Air Force general, and when I ask Kris about his father, his brother, his sister and his mom, all Kris says is “My dad was a two-star general, and we were a military family,” as if that is supposed to explain everything. After Oxford, Kris flew an Army helicopter in Germany for three years and then volunteered for Vietnam. The Army decided he was too precious to send to the front and instead assigned him to teach at West Point, where they planned to groom him for higher offices. This was not what Captain Kris wanted he wanted to go to the war with his men. Then, while he was on leave in Nashville, his life took a radical turn.
