Within the last three weeks, TV’s documentary explosion has given us two damning close-ups on decades-old celebrity scandals. In one, an insatiable media-industrial complex takes a vulnerable young woman into its maw, judging her sexuality and questioning, then actively undermining, her sanity. In the other, it happens again. The main difference between them lies in who the celebrity is at the center of each public maelstrom — and how that simple fact determines who survives in its wake. Framing Britney Spears , a New York Times -produced documentary that premiered February 5th and is now streaming on Hulu , forces us to look anew at Spears’ shot-out-of-a-cannon rise as a teenager and public implosion several years later, both a function of relentless media attention. Some of that attention was courted, sure, as it would be by any young pop star, male or female. But the tenor of the media fervor, the implicit slack-jawed drooling and pawing, the pure … [Read more...] about How the Media Failed Britney Spears and Dylan Farrow

Chance the Rapper has filed a lawsuit against his former manager, Pat Corcoran, for allegedly exploiting his position, demanding kickbacks, and damaging the musician’s reputation, The Chicago Tribune reports. The lawsuit was filed on February 19th in Cook County court in Illinois. It arrives about two months after Corcoran filed his own lawsuit that not only claimed Chance the Rapper — real name Chancelor Bennett — owed him $2.5 million in unpaid expenses and commissions, but that Chance’s highly anticipated 2019 debut album, The Big Day , was a rushed job, which led to poor reviews, underwhelming concert ticket sales, and ultimately a canceled tour. The new lawsuit from Bennett calls Corcoran’s filing a “gratuitous, fabricated narrative [that] is offensive and insulting.” It seeks to dismiss various counts in Corcoran’s suit, and also secure more than $1 million in damages for each of its own three charges: breach of fiduciary duty; interference that led to the loss of … [Read more...] about Chance the Rapper Accuses Ex-Manager of Demanding Kickbacks, Exploiting Position in New Lawsuit

The interview even disclosed how the Snyder Cut was deeply personal to the Snyders, and even shed some light on the aggressive intrusion of WB executives on Snyder's sets. Amidst those confessions and personal comments from the Snyders, Zack also said a few things about his take on the DCEU, which makes his vision more allegorical to DC fandom and proves his mantle as a creative filmmaker. One of those details included a subplot that Zack wanted to include in his original plan for Justice League . And that was a love story between Lois Lane and Bruce Wayne. No, it isn't a typo. There was a planned relationship arc between Bruce and Lois in Justice League , which though sound ridiculous given Lois and Clark's history, the way Zack explains it, it seems only logical. More interestingly, the … [Read more...] about Original Justice League Plans Included a Romance Between Batman & Lois Lane
Hardcore legend Ian MacKaye explains how Woodstock and an unexpected house guest helped lay the foundation for his love of music in this new excerpt from Eric Spitznagel’s new book, Rock Stars on the Record: The Albums That Changed Their Lives . The book consists of interviews with an array of artists discussing the music that influenced them most when they were kids. Along with MacKaye, the book features Laura Jane Grace, Mitski, Cherie Currie, Mac DeMarco, “Weird Al” Yankovic, Suzi Quatro and more. For MacKaye, his parents weren’t a particularly potent source of musical inspiration, though he says he did grow fond of Floyd Cramer’s “Last Date,” a “schmaltzy, instrumental piano, kind of swing jazz thing,” that exemplified his mother’s taste. Rather, MacKaye’s ears were sharpened by outside influences: A babysitter who introduced him to Jimi Hendrix; a woman living in a commune down the road from his childhood home who had James Gang and Jefferson Airplane records; and … [Read more...] about Ian MacKaye Talks ‘Woodstock’ Soundtrack Obsession in New Book Excerpt
