The hurdles are high. But if we learned anything from the recent vaccine development it should be that big things can happen when we all put our heads together, attack a common problem, and commit to making meaningful change. One easy change you can pledge to make is to walk the sustainable walk when shopping for shoes . Many titans of the footwear industry have probably earned a long walk of shame as shoe production accounts for a fifth of the fashion industry’s environmental impact and generates 1.4 percent of global carbon emissions annually. But nowadays, there are players like Allbirds and Rothy’s, as well as established giants like Adidas and Converse , who are thinking outside of the shoebox and making it easy to be green. A whole new world of vegan leather, bamboo … [Read more...] about Best Foot Forward: These 13 Shoe Brands Pair Style With Sustainability
‘SNL’: Selena Gomez Spoofs ‘Old Enough’; Sends Boyfriend Out Like Toddler On Errands
Selena Gomez ended up with bags of onions and makeup multiple shades darker than her skin tone in a hilarious SNL sketch that spoofed Old Enough . The original Old Enough is a 90s series that hails from Japan shot documentary-style as filmmakers follow toddlers on errands for their parents, which recently began streaming in the U.S. via Netflix. In the Saturday Night Live sketch remake, instead of sending young children to the store, subjects send out their adult partners with a list of things to buy for them. Gomez plays Kelsey and her long-term boyfriend Matt is played by Mikey Day . Matt preps for his big trip out into the world with a little help from Kelsey, who gives him everything he needs: a giant water bottle, a messenger bag, and a huge yellow flag emblazoned with the word “Stop.” Kelsey’s errand requires him to visit Sephora, but he’s quickly overwhelmed with the aisles and aisles of makeup to choose from and he hilariously begins to cry. He … [Read more...] about ‘SNL’: Selena Gomez Spoofs ‘Old Enough’; Sends Boyfriend Out Like Toddler On Errands
Ukraine’s Jewish Community Fights Back Against Russia’s Invasion — and Against Putin’s Lies
DNIPRO, Ukraine — Before the war, Rabbi Meyr Stambler never broke Shabbat and never lied to his wife, with whom he had lived for 28 years. Now he has done both. If there is an emergency, like evacuations, he will answer his phone on Saturdays. In the early days of the Russian invasion, he sent his wife Sarah, his ten children, and his three grandkids to Israel, promising he would join them in a few days. But he lied. He never meant to leave Ukraine. Rabbi Stambler, the Chairman of the Chabad-affiliated Council of the Federation of Jewish Communities of Ukraine, came to Dnipro from New York in 1991. He was nineteen years old. He has lived here ever since. He considers himself Ukrainian. “On average I sleep three hours per day,” he says. “Now I can devote all my time to helping my community without being worried for my family. I decided it was time for them to flee after the nuclear power plant in Zaporizzhya region — 130 miles away — was overtaken by Russians troops in the early … [Read more...] about Ukraine’s Jewish Community Fights Back Against Russia’s Invasion — and Against Putin’s Lies
The Kids in the Hall Are Back — Older, Slightly Less Angry and Still Incredibly F–king Funny
It starts with one of them casually saying, “Write what you know” — it may be Mark McKinney, slightly leaning back in his chair and staring at the ceiling, or it might be Bruce McCulloch, who’s wandering around the conference room, checking his phone as it charges and idly munching on a pastry. Whoever said it first, it’s definitely Kevin McDonald who quickly jumps in and, as if on cue, immediately chants, “Write what you know!” He says it again, at which point Dave Foley joins in as well. “Write what you know!” “Write what you know!” McKinney and McCulloch, both grinning, start singing along as well: “Write what you know! Write what you know! Write what you know!” Scott Thompson is too busy laughing to harmonize at first, until he finally composes himself, clears his throat, and then beautifully bellows out, in the most operatic tenor imaginable: “Wriiiiite! Whaaat! Yoooouuuu! Knoooooowwwwwwww !!!” Minutes before, the legendary sketch-comedy quintet the Kids in the Hall had … [Read more...] about The Kids in the Hall Are Back — Older, Slightly Less Angry and Still Incredibly F–king Funny
Sid Vicious Accused of Murder
Former Sex Pistol Sid Vicious was arrested on October 12th at the Chelsea Hotel and charged with the fatal stabbing of his girlfriend of almost two years, Nancy Spungen. Spungen, like Vicious (real name John Simon Ritchie) a heroin addict, is thought to have died between the hours of five and nine on the morning Sid was arrested. Her body was found in the bathroom of the couple’s first-floor hotel room in a pool of blood. Dr. Geetha Natarajan, associate medical examiner for Manhattan, said the cause of death was internal hemorrhaging due to a single knife wound to the lower abdomen. Vicious’ personal friends in the punk community immediately suspected that Spungen’s death was part of a botched double suicide. “They were both really depressed and talked about dying the last few weeks,” said a woman who had become friendly with them at the Chelsea. Another friend said the couple had a long-standing agreement that if one died, the other would follow. Then, a week after his release … [Read more...] about Sid Vicious Accused of Murder
Explaining Who-Mania, For Pete’s Sake
NEW YORK – Like prison guards readying for a riot, a security force of close to five hundred assembled and listened to a quick briefing before going into the cavernous Madison Square Garden for the first of the Who ‘s four sellout concerts. Outside, before the doors were opened, the predominantly male crowd grew larger and the noise level increased proportionately until at seven o’clock a dungareed army of 21,000 ticket holders lurched through the gates and the dash for seats began. There was tension in the air, a tingling sensation, similar to the rush of excitement that prefaced the Stones ‘ concert and Dylan concerts at the Garden. The Who last played New York three years ago, and the day was marked by the fatal stabbing of a guard in front of the Forest Hills Stadium. (The appearances this time around were, in a sense, owed: The Who avoided New York during a 22-date U.S. tour last winter because they couldn’t arrange compatible dates.) In spite of violent incidents at … [Read more...] about Explaining Who-Mania, For Pete’s Sake
Kevin Bacon On ‘Tremors’ Costar Fred Ward: “I Couldn’t Have Asked For A Better Partner” To Battle Giant Underground Worms
Kevin Bacon will never forget the work he did with costar Fred Ward on the cult favorite film Tremors . Bacon honored Ward today in a social media post. Ward died last Sunday at age 79. “So sad to hear about Fred Ward. When it came to battling underground worms, I couldn’t have asked for a better partner. I will always remember chatting about his love of Django Reinhardt and jazz guitar during our long, hot days in the high desert. Rest In Peace, Fred,” Bacon said on Twitter. Bacon and Ward teamed on the 1990 film, which became a fan favorite thanks to incessant replays on cable after bombing at the box office. Tremors was about the small desert town of Perfection, Nevada, which has enormous worm-like monsters killing anyone who ventures onto their turf. So sad to hear about Fred Ward. When it came to battling underground worms I couldn’t have asked for a better partner. RS Recommends: The Best Canned Cocktails to Sip On-the-Go This Season
If you purchase an independently reviewed product or service through a link on our website, Rolling Stone may receive an affiliate commission. We all had our hot hard seltzer summer moment last year, and that was admittedly a great time to be a refreshing drink-in-a-can. While hard seltzer has cemented its place in our backyard coolers for now, we like to think of that trend as more a stepping stone to recognizing that you don’t have to sacrifice well-crafted flavors for portability. The best canned cocktails, or ready-to-drink (RTD) cocktails, have really stepped up their game in the past few years, offering surprisingly upscale spirits, and in some case replicating the taste of a freshly mixed drink to a T, all in an easy-to-carry package. There are more diverse offerings than ever, from margs and ranch waters, to even whiskey cocktails and gin-based bevvies. Whatever your libation, we guarantee that there’s a canned cocktail out there for you. You may think that … [Read more...] about RS Recommends: The Best Canned Cocktails to Sip On-the-Go This Season
