‘Avengers: Endgame’ Mows Down ‘Long Shot’, ‘Intruder’ & ‘UglyDolls’ With $145M+ Second Weekend, Crosses $600M In Record Time

· May 5, 2019 ·

5th Update/writethru Sunday AM: Following Saturday and Friday posts, refresh for Sunday chart and more analysis. Why did three studios book new titles against Disney/Marvel’s Avengers: Endgame ‘s second weekend? They truly believed they were counter-programming the monster hit and could somehow survive: Lionsgate’s Long Shot with females, The Intruder with African Americans, and STXfilms’ foray into feature animation UglyDolls aimed at young girls. They knew what they were doing and blaming Endgame –which Disney is calling at $145.8M, the second-best second weekend ever after Star Wars: Force Awakens’ $149.2M)–is like saying the dog ate their homework. One B.O. analytics source even cynically opines to us, “It’s quite conceivable that even without Endgame , none of these films would have performed.” Endgame can celebrate that it’s crossing $600M in a record 10 days today with $619.7M, faster than Force Awakens (12 days), Infinity War (26 days) and … [Read more...] about ‘Avengers: Endgame’ Mows Down ‘Long Shot’, ‘Intruder’ & ‘UglyDolls’ With $145M+ Second Weekend, Crosses $600M In Record Time

What Went Wrong With ‘The Rhythm Section’? Action Pic Could Lose $30M+

· February 2, 2020 ·

You could tell that there was something wrong with The Rhythm Section as early as last April when Paramount didn’t include the title in its CinemaCon reel of then-intended big pics like Terminator: Dark Fate and Gemini Man. After what was buzzed to be a female James Bond pic from 007 Eon producers Barbara Broccoli and Michael Wilson, we finally learned why Paramount didn’t bet on this critically panned-audience rejected knock-off of La Femme Nikita. Rhythm Section reps Blake Lively’s lowest wide opening at the domestic box office with $2.8M. It’s an unfortunate setback for the former Gossip Girl alum, who’s proved herself to be bankable on a global basis with A Simple Favor ($97M+) and The Shallows ($119M). Man, she even injured her hand during filming. Note this is a film that she over-delivered on, and critics have been quick to note her sublime performance. Rhythm Section is also the lowest opening ever for a movie debuting at … [Read more...] about What Went Wrong With ‘The Rhythm Section’? Action Pic Could Lose $30M+

Guardians 2 Pushes MCU Past $11B at the Worldwide Box Office

· May 1, 2017 ·

For a little under a decade, the Marvel Cinematic Universe has pretty much been the standard for consistent box office success. Heading into their first major release of 2017 with James Gunn's Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 , the viability of the brand is showing absolutely no signs of slowing down. With the early international grosses already coming in for Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 , the MCU has officially crossed the $11 billion mark at the worldwide box office. According to Box Office Mojo , with Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 bringing in $106 million over the weekend, the MCU worldwide gross now stands at $11.02 billion. Since Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 is expected to absolutely crush it domestically and since it still has a lot of markets to open in, expect that total to go up quite a bit in the very near future. Not to mention that Marvel Studios also has Spider-Man: Homecoming and Thor: Ragnarok set to hit theaters this year as well. Even on the … [Read more...] about Guardians 2 Pushes MCU Past $11B at the Worldwide Box Office

Wolverine Spin-off X-23 Is Happening

· October 24, 2017 ·

Hugh Jackman may be done playing Wolverine, but Logan managed to inspire another movie centered on a mutant with adamantium claws and a bit of an anger problem. It looks like Laura, aka X-23, is getting her own spin-off movie. While Fox hasn't nailed down a release date or a creative team, a script for a Laura spin-off is in development, as confirmed by Logan director James Mangold. Here's what he had to say about it. "We're just working on a script." RELATED: Deadpool 3 Announcement Has Logan Star Hopeful for the Return of X-23 James Mangold didn't have much else to say about it at the moment, but that's enough to let fans know that the Logan spin-off featuring the young Dafne Keen is in the works. Logan has a great many impressive elements to it, but Keen, who made her feature film debut, absolutely stunned as X-23. As such, there's been a little bit of buzz about her getting a spin-off ever since the movie debuted. During the Logan Noir screening a few months ago, Mangold indicated … [Read more...] about Wolverine Spin-off X-23 Is Happening
