How to Mix Sound for Masked Singers and Empty Arenas
This is the latest installment of Rolling Stone‘s Music in Crisis series, which looks at how people all across the music industry are coping with the coronavirus pandemic. When Alex Rangel headed into work on March 12th, 2020, as the lead audio engineer at Denver ’s Ball Arena, his professional life as he knew it was coming to an end. That period was, he says, “possibly the most intense and frightening 30 hours of my career.” Lead audio engineers typically hold full-time, salaried positions at many of the country’s leading arenas, but not in Denver. Rangel and several colleagues in similar positions are employed as hourly contract workers; Rangel makes $22 an hour. Unlike many peers who might have received some unemployment benefits or reduced pay throughout 2020, Rangel has been entirely dependent on finding more work in order to make ends meet. Eric Church Makes It a Triple With ‘Heart & Soul’
Eric Church might look like a tough-guy outlaw who plays by his own rules, but his real gift has been for bending the rules to his will. No recent country artist has maneuvered the Nashville system as successfully, remaining dedicated to the power of down-the-center hitmaking even as he’s helped expand the parameters of the genre to include everything from soft-rock balladry (2009’s “Carolina”) to U2-Metallica arena grandeur (2014’s The Outsiders ) to Wilco-referencing classic rock (2015’s Mr. Misunderstood ). Church’s latest project is his most ambitious: a 24-song triple album released over the course of a week in three segments. Heart, &, and Soul further refine the melodic, mid-tempo storytelling Church excels at, offering a moving summation of what he has done well throughout his 15-year career. You get brash statements that recall his irreverent early days (“Stick That in Your Country Song”), as well as maximalist rock-and-soul like the Elton John-meets-Meat Loaf … [Read more...] about Eric Church Makes It a Triple With ‘Heart & Soul’
Horace Bowers Sr.’s Remarkable Journey At Heart Of Oscar-Nominated Doc ‘A Concerto Is A Conversation’
In his 92 years, African-American businessman Horace Bowers Sr.—one of the two main subjects of the Oscar-nominated short documentary A Concerto Is a Conversation —has faced many obstacles in his path. He’s always found a way around them. “In any life people have some ups and downs. I’ve had them, but I was able to come out of them and keep moving without being crushed,” Bowers tells Deadline. “Sometimes we can be crushed to a point that we just don’t feel like moving again. I’ve never reached that point. I always figure, well, if they knock me down I’m going to get up and go anyway.” Many of the barriers he encountered were the result of his race. Bowers was raised in the Jim Crow south, in tiny Bascom, Florida. He recalls as a child seeing his father treated with disrespect when they entered a country store and were attended by a young white boy.
