Monster High is getting double-rebooted for television, with a new animated series and the toy line's first live-action project both in the works. Deadline reports that Nickelodeon and Mattel are teaming up to develop an all-new animated series adaptation along with a live-action TV movie. The network plans to premiere both Monster High adaptations in 2022. The new Monster High animated series will follow popular characters like Clawdeen Wolf, Draculaura, and Frankie Stein as they "navigate the hilarity of high school in the hallowed halls of Monster High." Shea Fontana ( DC Superhero Girls ) serves as the series showrunner with Claudia Spinelli overseeing the project for Nickelodeon and Christopher Keenan overseeing for Mattel. Executive producer Adam Bonnett says the reimagination of the franchise will "focus on addressing important themes of identity and empowerment for kids today." Sony Pictures Animation issued a press release today that confirmed a report from February that The Smurfs 3 will be a completely animated reboot, with the studio bringing on Kelly Asbury ( Shrek 2 , Gnomeo and Juliet ) to direct. The studio also confirmed that Genndy Tartakovsky is directing Hotel Transylvania 2 , which has Adam Sandler returning to voice Dracula, along with the previously announced Popeye and a new project entitled Can You Imagine? that he is developing for the studio. Ready your salt servers for this latest rumor, as a new insider report claims that Sony Pictures has reportedly expressed interest in bringing back director Sam Raimi and star Tobey Maguire for Spider-man 4 , continuing the franchise they started back in 2002. Now, while this latest Spidey rumor will require a fist full of salt to help it go down, it is worth remembering that, not only is there heavy speculation that Maguire will return to the role for the MCU's Spider-Man: No Way Home , but that both Marvel and DC are planning on going to some crazy places as they branch out into exploring the multiverse. Gossip Girl and Chuck executive producers Josh Schwartz and Stephanie Savage have signed on to write and produce Universal's long gestating adaptation Monster High . We first reported on this project back in June 2010, when Smallville creators Alfred Gough and Miles Millar signed on to write the screenplay, although they are no longer involved. No plot details were released, but the story will be based on Mattel's toy line of the same name, which features the teenage children of iconic monsters. The toys are popular with tween and teen girls.
