Desert Trip: How Classic Rock Mega-Fest Proved Doubters Wrong

· October 13, 2016 ·

It was inevitable. Mick Jagger, who coined the phrase “Coachella for old people” last spring to describe Desert Trip, cracked the first jokes about aging rock stars from the stage, during the Rolling Stones ‘ opening-night set on October 7th. The singer dubbed the festival – featuring six of rock’s biggest still-working legends of the Sixties and Seventies – “the Palm Springs retirement home for genteel English musicians.” Then Jagger asked if anyone remembered “the late Eighties” before the Stones jumped into “Mixed Emotions” from 1989’s Steel Wheels . The Stones were also the first act at Desert Trip to fire up new material. They played “Ride ‘Em on Down,” a Jimmy Reed cover from their forthcoming album, Blue and Lonesome , and debuted an unexpected romp through the Beatles’ “Come Together” that sounded like the Stones had written it instead for 1969’s Let It Bleed . The next night, with his rowdy, young band Promise of the Real, Neil Young mixed crowd-pleasers like … [Read more...] about Desert Trip: How Classic Rock Mega-Fest Proved Doubters Wrong

The Fat Boys: Hip-Hop’s Pop Culture Ambassadors on Crushin’ 1987

· February 19, 2021 ·

On August 14th, 1987, pioneering hip-hop heavyweights the Fat Boys cemented their status as one of rap’s premier pop culture ambassadors with the simultaneous release of their platinum-selling fourth album Crushin’ and their breakout comedy Disorderlies . With a matchless mixture of skills, charisma, a tireless work ethic, a sense of humor and a powerful mouth-powered rhythm machine, the trio of Mark “ Prince Markie Dee ” Morales, Damon “Kool Rock-Ski” Wimbley and Darren “Buff Love” Robinson (a.k.a. “the Human Beatbox”) was integral in bringing rap music to the attention of mainstream audiences. Their ubiquity in 1987 was the peak of a pop cultural coup d’état: a platinum album, a hit single with the Beach Boys, a movie, an appearance on Hollywood Squares and more. By 1987, the Fat Boys had already experienced an impressive measure of success and notoriety, helping to develop and shape hip-hop’s early years on wax. Their first two albums, 1984’s self-titled debut and 1985’s … [Read more...] about The Fat Boys: Hip-Hop’s Pop Culture Ambassadors on Crushin’ 1987

Black Panther Villain Is Inspired by Heath Ledger’s Joker

· December 29, 2017 ·

Marvel's Black Panther is shaping up to be one of the biggest movies of the new year, with a Fandango poll of 8,000 moviegoers claiming that it is the second most anticipated movie of 2018, behind Marvel's Avengers: Infinity War . While we'll have to wait and see if this anticipation will lead to another huge box office win for Marvel, new details have surfaced from star Michael B. Jordan, who revealed that he was inspired by two villainous performances outside of the MCU, Heath Ledger's Joker in The Dark Knight and Michael Fassbender's Magneto in the most recent X-Men trilogy. Here's what the actor had to say below. "You see performances as an actor, and as a fan, you look at Heath Ledger's performance, say, in The Dark Knight, and it's like, 'Wow.' I want to try to get something like that. You want Michael Fassbender's Magneto. Just trying to find my place amongst those roles, and strive for that, even if I don't make it." A Piece of Jimi Hendrix’s Rainbow

· December 2, 1976 ·

Part One: The Death I n the six years since Jimi Hendrix died, his legacy has become one of contemporary culture’s most heavily trafficked “natural” resources. At last count there were four filmed documentaries; six books (one each in France and Germany, two each in the U.S. and U.K.); one magazine and uncounted boutiques and discotheques named after his song, “Foxy Lady”; eight albums from Warners and an amazing 49 bootleg LPs; two Jimi Hendrix archives (in Seattle and Amsterdam); a Jimi Hendrix Memorial Foundation (one of the sloppier rip-offs, about which more soon); and thousands of posters and pendants and T-shirts and buttons and busts, authorized and otherwise. In addition, by spring of 1976, there’d been 165 different legal actions involving the Hendrix estate and perhaps as many more involving related figures, such as Warner Brothers and the estate of Michael Jeffrey, Hendrix’s manager who died in 1973. Settlements have ranged widely, from $300,000 in back royalties … [Read more...] about A Piece of Jimi Hendrix’s Rainbow
