LL Cool J, The Go-Go’s, Tina Turner & Carole King Among 2021 Rock Hall Nominees

· February 10, 2021 ·

Carole King , LL Cool J , Tina Turner and the New York Dolls are among this year’s Rock and Roll Hall of Fame nominees getting another chance at induction, while first-timers include Iron Maiden, the Go-Go’s and, surprisingly, Dionne Warwick. The final selection of inductees will be announced in May, with the 36th Annual Rock & Roll Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony to take place in Cleveland this fall. To be eligible, artists or bands must have released a commercial recording at least 25 years prior to nomination, allowing Foo Fighters to join the fray. In all, seven of the 16 nominees are on the ballot for the first time: Foo Fighters, The Go-Go’s, Iron Maiden, JAY-Z, Mary J. Blige, Fela Kuti, and Warwick. Melissa McCarthy, Warner Bros, Gersh, Brett Ratner & Ben Falcone Sued For More Than $10M In ‘Life Of The Party’ Ripoff Suit

· September 16, 2020 ·

The more than $10 million breach of contract lawsuit just filed over the 2018 Melissa McCarthy starrer Life of the Party may prove a party pooper for the Ghostbusters actress, Warner Bros , director Ben Falcone , the Gersh Agency, agent Sean Barclay, and Brett Ratner and his RatPac banner. “Plaintiff formally pitched the Concepts to the Gersh Defendants in 2014, and was informed that the Concepts had significant commercial likelihood of success,” a jury-seeking suit filed Wednesday in Los Angeles Superior Court says. “At this meeting, the script, ideas, story and treatment referred to herein were discussed and presented to the Gersh Defendants, and details were further discussed at length,” adds the five-claim complaint ( read it here ). Flashback: Tina Turner Rips Through ‘Proud Mary’ at Farewell Concert

· February 11, 2021 ·

The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame announced its nominees for the class of 2021 earlier this week, and many people were surprised to see Tina Turner on the list. After all, she’s one of the most beloved singers in rock history and she’s been eligible since her 1974 debut solo LP Tina Turns the Country On! turned 25 in 1999. One would assume she’d gotten in years ago. And she did get in back in 1991, but it was along with her abusive ex-husband, Ike Turner. Phil Spector gave their induction speech. Unsurprisingly, Tina was a no-show that night even though Ike was in a California prison at the time following a cocaine bust. Her official explanation was that she was taking the year off from public appearances. But as popular as Ike and Tina were in the Sixties and early Seventies, Tina did much better on her own once Private Dancer took off in 1984, turning her into an international icon. And it’s not like the Hall of Fame held back on inducting Paul Simon as a solo act in 2001 … [Read more...] about Flashback: Tina Turner Rips Through ‘Proud Mary’ at Farewell Concert

Bootsy Collins on the Genius of Fela Kuti: ‘What He Brought Was Just So Powerful’

· February 17, 2021 ·

In “Viva Nigeria,” one of Fela Kuti ’s earliest 45s, the Afrobeat pioneer proclaims, “Men are born, kings are made.” Kuti, who was born a man in 1938 and died a king of music in ’97, transformed his home country and the world at large into something more inclusive and compassionate through driving, dynamic drums, big, funky horns, and scabrous lyrics that skewered the violent military junta controlling Nigeria. He had studied music in London, where he played piano in jazz, R&B, and rock groups — creating a tight bond with Cream’s Ginger Baker — and toured the United States by the time he returned to Lagos in 1970. That’s when Kuti, whose mother was a feminist and labor organizer, decided to use his unique fusion of African sounds and American soul-music innovation as a vehicle for bettering the political climate of Nigeria. It was also around this time when James Brown staged a run of concerts at a stadium in Lagos. He had recently overhauled his backing band and brought in … [Read more...] about Bootsy Collins on the Genius of Fela Kuti: ‘What He Brought Was Just So Powerful’
