The hurdles are high. But if we learned anything from the recent vaccine development it should be that big things can happen when we all put our heads together, attack a common problem, and commit to making meaningful change. One easy change you can pledge to make is to walk the sustainable walk when shopping for shoes . Many titans of the footwear industry have probably earned a long walk of shame as shoe production accounts for a fifth of the fashion industry’s environmental impact and generates 1.4 percent of global carbon emissions annually. But nowadays, there are players like Allbirds and Rothy’s, as well as established giants like Adidas and Converse , who are thinking outside of the shoebox and making it easy to be green. A whole new world of vegan leather, bamboo … [Read more...] about Best Foot Forward: These 13 Shoe Brands Pair Style With Sustainability

‘Dumbledore’ Opens To $43M U.S., Lowest In ‘Harry Potter’ Franchise; What Now For The J.K. Rowling IP? – Sunday AM Update
SUNDAY AM UPDATE: If there’s still a five-picture plan in place for Fantastic Beasts, clearly after this weekend’s $43M opening for The Secrets of Dumbledore, it’s time to pivot the Harry Potter franchise. That’s the lowest opening ever stateside for a J.K. Rowling Wizarding World movie, and it’s probably not prudent for the studio to go for another low opening record on the next project from the franchise. It was evident Potter fans didn’t like the last movie, Crimes of Grindelwald , even if there was a cliffhanger, and they didn’t want to come back for Dumbledore. With the Warner Bros.-Discovery merger made official on Wall Street earlier this week, this is unfortunately not the best optics for the studio. However, as CEO David Zaslav gets to know Hollywood, he should realize that sometimes greenlight decisions pre-date the studio’s current regime. Who would greenlight a $200M net production on a franchise that wasn’t working? The Fantastic Beasts movies were put into … [Read more...] about ‘Dumbledore’ Opens To $43M U.S., Lowest In ‘Harry Potter’ Franchise; What Now For The J.K. Rowling IP? – Sunday AM Update
CPAC Europe Is a Safe Space for Authoritarians — and the Republicans Who Love Them
BUDAPEST, Hungary — European and American conservatives descended on this city Thursday morning to bemoan the supposed ‘suicide’ of Western civilization. The impending cultural death was blamed on a variety of causes, including immigrants who were “replacing” native-born workers; communists and “progressivists” pushing “gender madness”; and liberal democracy, which was creating a new “civic religion” out of the rights of man. Speakers, ranging from the CEO of Parler to the Prime Minister of Hungary, railed against the ‘woke’ media and the “unified troops of the international left” during a series of programming blocs with titles like “Western Civilization Under Attack,” “In God We Trust,” and “The Culture Wars in the Media.” It was the opening day of CPAC Hungary, the first European edition of the American Conservative Union’s flagship confab, and dark clouds were forming over Hungary. “James Burnham said that civilization dies only by suicide. I’m afraid that our lack of … [Read more...] about CPAC Europe Is a Safe Space for Authoritarians — and the Republicans Who Love Them

‘Real Time’s’ Bill Maher Claims Rise Of LGBTQ May Be Sparked By Need To Be Trendy
Bill Maher touched one of society’s third rails tonight on his HBO show Real Time , taking on the rise of the LGBTQ community in his “New Rules” editorial at the end of the show. Noting that polls have documented an exponential increase in those who claim LGBTQ status, he asked whether people should be allowed to ask, “What’s up with that?’ It wasn’t that long ago that when adults asked children what they wanted to be when they grew up, “They meant what profession,” Maher said. He quoted a recent ACLU finding that claimed the controversy about abortion rights affects LGBTQ people more than so-called “Breeders.” While allowing that everyone should always be mindful of respecting and protecting others, he said, “Someone needs to say it – not eveything’s about you. It’s okay to ask quetions about something very new,” and turned toward the trend of putting young children on hormone blockers. “We’re literally experimenting on children,” Maher claimed, adding that we … [Read more...] about ‘Real Time’s’ Bill Maher Claims Rise Of LGBTQ May Be Sparked By Need To Be Trendy
Trueno Ushers in a New Era of Socially Conscious Rap en Español
The last couple of weeks have marked some of the most gigantic, game-changing moments in Trueno ’s career. First, the 20-year-old Argentinean rapper was singled out by Damon Albarn , who brought him onstage at the Quilmes Rock in Buenos Aires earlier this month and had him freestyle to “Clint Eastwood” for thousands of people. “It was incredible,” he says on a recent Zoom call in Spanish. “I grew up listening to Gorillaz , and it means a lot to me to be able to showcase Argentinean rap at that level.” Then, last Friday, Trueno put out his new album, Bien o Mal , a project that takes inspiration from old-school hip-hop from the U.S. while celebrating traditions from Argentina and Latin America. It’s also a deeply politically and socially engaged LP that outlines struggles happening across the continent. Splitting the tracks between two sides, “The Bad” and “The Good,” Trueno raps about dictatorships, economic hardships, crime, and inequality across 14 songs, all while … [Read more...] about Trueno Ushers in a New Era of Socially Conscious Rap en Español
100 Years, 100 Maverick Movies
T he way I see it, and I’ve got the conch, the best movies of the last 100 years were made by mavericks who busted rules to follow their obsessions. We’re talking about a century of cinema, but it’s still rock & roll to me. I had certain criteria: Each movie had to embody that rock spirit of artful defiance. Each director had to be limited to only one movie – otherwise you could just list the collected works of Alfred Hitchcock, Orson Welles, John Ford, Billy Wilder and Martin Scorsese and end it. Anything dutiful I tossed. Don’t look for the biggest cash cow ( Titanic ), the winner of the most Oscars ( Ben-Hur ) or film -school staples like Battleship Potemkin . The 100 maverick movies on this list have one more thing in common: They’re alive. 1. The Godfather Trilogy (1972, 1974, 1990, Francis Ford Coppola): The flawed Part III barely slides in on goodwill. No matter. This is entertainment raised to the level of art: an offer you can’t refuse. Coppola gives … [Read more...] about 100 Years, 100 Maverick Movies
