x As Avengers: Infinity War comes into focus, and Thanos’ all-consuming masterplan begins to take shape, we’re starting to form a better understanding of the Marvel event movie and, more specifically, its box office projections. Case in point: Deadline has crunched the latest numbers to reveal that Infinity War is now tracking for a suitably massive $200 million opening in North America, where it’s poised to blow every other April record – think Furious 7 ($147M) and Fate of the Furious ($98.7M) – out of the water. After opening to a robust $61.7 million last weekend, Ready Player has mounted an impressive hold throughout the work week. As of 5pm Thursday in Beijing, the Warner Bros. blockbuster had totaled $110 million, chalking up more than $17 million for the day. That's enough to make it Hollywood's biggest film of the year in China so far, unseating Marvel Disney's Black Panther, which topped out at $105 million. At the domestic North American box office, Ready Player is expected to slip into second place this weekend behind Paramount’s silent horror thriller A Quiet Place. The Spielberg blockbuster had grossed $64.4 million in North America as of Tuesday. Most analysts … [Read more...] about China Box Office: ‘Ready Player One’ Rockets Past $100M
The Motion Picture Association of America (MPAA) released a comprehensive report breaking down the domestic and global box office for 2017, with the North American box office (U.S. and Canada) hitting a new low. While the domestic box office finished at $11.2 billion for the year, just 2% down from last year's record total of $11.6 billion, the number of actual tickets sold dropped 6% to 1.24 billion, the lowest admissions level since 1995. With a growing Chinese box office market, though, the global box office set a new record with $40.6 billion. MPAA chief Charles Rivkin acknowledged the significant changes within the entertainment industry in a conference call with reporters, where he was joined by National Association of Theater Owners (NATO) head John Fithian. Fithian downplayed the decrease in ticket sales, noting that, "Admissions have been relatively constant," while admitting that they have fluctuated throughout the years. Here's what Rivkin had to say in a statement. … [Read more...] about U.S. Box Office Sank to a 23 Year Low in 2017
