Current studio cumes stand at $3.28B domestic and $6.717B from the international box office. That’s $9.997B global through today. This is a new record for worldwide box office for any studio in a calendar year, and surpasses Disney’s previous placeholder of $7.6B that was posted in 2016. The above numbers do not take into account Fox titles. When they are added, the combined global box office for Dis is $11.94B ($3.8B domestic/$8.14B overseas) so far. Wow. Neon’s film festival favorite Portrait of a Lady on Fire didn’t cause an inferno at the specialty box office, but it managed to have a warming glow of an estimated weekend gross of $67,105. The critically lauded romance directed by Céline Sciamma and starring Noémie Merlant and Adèle Haenel had its one-week qualifying run at the Angelika in New York and the Arclight Hollywood in Los Angeles with a per-screen average of $33,552. It was #1 at the Angelika and came in at #2 behind Knives Out at the Arclight. Its debut is one of the best averages of any French film in the U.S. in the last 20 years behind Amelie and Coco Chanel. To add to its arsenal of acclaim, the drama sits at 97% on Rotten Tomatoes and is the second best-reviewed film of the year right behind its fellow Neon title Parasite. Disney's Frozen 2 continues to rule the box office. The animated musical was able to earn $34.6 million over the weekend, which was more than enough to stay at number one. The movie has yet to leave the number one spot since debuting there three weeks ago. Frozen 2 broke Thanksgiving weekend numbers and is well on its way to crossing the $1 billion mark. As of this writing, the sequel has brought in over $919 million globally. On the opposite end of the spectrum, STXFilms' Playmobil: The Movie movie bombed with only $811,000 domestically. Globally, it faired a little better, with a little over $12 million, though that is a far cry from the $75 million it cost to make. The animated family movie based on European children's toys now has the record for the third-worst domestic opening for a movie debuting in over 2,000 theaters. Last weekend gave the summer box office a much-needed jolt, as Toy Story 4 brought in a huge $120.9 million during its opening frame. With a number like that, even with a steep drop, it's going to be tough for other titles to compete, but don't blame anyone for trying. Warner Bros. and New Line are set to unleash the latest chapter of The Conjuring universe, Annabelle Comes Home and Universal will be releasing Yesterday, which is driven by the music of The Beatles. Disney and Marvel are also re-releasing Avengers: Endgame with some bonus content in an attempt to get a little closer to Avatar's record. Annabelle Comes Home was no match for Toy Story 4 at this weekend's box office. Disney and Pixar's sequel was able to take in $57.9 million in its second weekend in theaters, which brings the worldwide total to a massive $360.5 million. Though the sequel did not do as well as initially estimated, it has been able to secure some big numbers overseas. As for Annabelle Comes Home, it was never expected to beat Toy Story 4 in its box office debut. It took the second position with a solid $20.3 million. Reception has been mixed for the horror sequel. Yesterday was able to secure the third spot with $17 million. The movie is about a man who wakes up in a world where the Beatles never existed, so he takes their songs as his own. The debut is also Danny Boyle's highest to date. Disney's Aladdin remake took number four this weekend after bringing in $9.3 million.
