Lindsey Bahr, Ap Film Writer Updated 12:26 pm CDT, Sunday, July 21, 2019 LOS ANGELES (AP) — If there was any doubt that the 2019 box office belonged to the Walt Disney Co., this weekend put an end to it. Not only did its photorealistic remake of "The Lion King" devour opening weekend records for the month of July and PG-rated films, but "Avengers: Endgame" also crept past "Avatar" to become the highest-grossing film of all time. "The Lion King" this weekend roared into 4,725 North American theaters, where it grossed a stunning $185 million, according to studio estimates on Sunday. Although reviews were mixed for Jon Favreau's remake of the 1994 animated film, audiences still turned out in droves to hear the A-list voice cast, from Beyoncé to Donald Glover, and see the innovative technology that made the film possible. "We've had a spectacular run this weekend," said Cathleen Taff, Disney's president of distribution. "We really did know we had something … [Read more...] about ‘The Lion King’ rules and ‘Endgame’ scores all-time record
Box office all time records
After making history and obliterating records across the globe, Avengers: Endgame is destined to become only the fifth movie to clear $2 billion at the worldwide box office, not adjusted for inflation. The looming question now: Does the Disney and Marvel superhero pic have a shot of dethroning Avatar's $2.78 billion and becoming the top-grossing movie of all time worldwide? Box office analysts say that would be a tough feat, but they aren't ruling anything out after Endgame opened to a record-shattering $1.2 billion globally, including unheard-of $350 million in North America and $859 million overseas. The international tally includes an all-time high of $330.5 million in China. "Knocking Avatar off its perch atop the box office mountain has been attempted by many films. No movie as of yet has been able to reach the heights attained by that box office juggernaut almost a decade ago," say Paul Dergarabedian of Comscore. "However, lest anyone think this is an easy road even that Endgame … [Read more...] about Box Office: Can ‘Avengers: Endgame’ Topple ‘Avatar’s’ $2.8 Billion All-Time Record?
Disney and Marvel's Avengers: Endgame obliterated numerous records in its $1.2 billion worldwide launch — a mind-boggling opening that came in nearly $600 million ahead of the previous record set a year ago by Avengers: Infinity War. The superhero pic is the culmination of the previous 21 films in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, a blockbuster series that commenced with Iron Man in 2008. “From the very beginning with Iron Man, all we’ve wanted to do was tell stories that brought these characters to life onscreen the way we’ve experienced them as fans of the comics,” Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige said in a statement Sunday morning. The Russo brothers, who directed Endgame and Infinity War back to back, added, "We poured our heart and soul into Avengers: Endgame, hoping to tell a story that would inspire audiences around the world. Our family of cast and crew felt honored to be entrusted with bringing the Infinity Saga to a close. To Kevin Feige, … [Read more...] about ‘Avengers: Endgame’ Box Office: All the Records Broken in $1.2B Global Bow

The result breaks opening records for an original horror movie, an original R-rated film and for a live-action original film since “Avatar” opened with $77 million in 2009. It is also the third best horror opening of all time after 2017’s “It” ($123.4 million) and last year’s “Halloween” sequel ($76.2 million). “It’s amazing,” said Jim Orr, the studio’s distribution chief. “The film absolutely blew by the most robust of forecasts and I think that’s all to do with the great appeal of Jordan Peele.” Peele’s highly anticipated sophomore effort … [Read more...] about Box office: ‘Us’ shatters records on way to $70.3-million weekend
Jordan Peele's Us dominated this weekend's box office with a record breaking $70.3 million domestic opening. The debut was enough to earn the Get Out follow up the third highest grossing debut for a horror movie in history. Only Steven Muschietti's big screen adaptation of Stephen King's IT ($123.4 million) and last year's Halloween sequel ($76.2 million) are ahead of Us. Peele's latest project has been a hit with fans and critics and many recommend seeing the movie twice to fully digest everything that is going on in it. As for the number two spot this weekend, that goes to Marvel Studios' Captain Marvel, which was able to bring in an additional $35 million.
