One summer a few years ago, Frances Bean Cobain worked as an intern in the New York offices of Rolling Stone . Frances – the daughter of Nirvana singer-guitarist Kurt Cobain and an executive producer of the new HBO documentary on his life, Kurt Cobain: Montage of Heck – was “a 15-year-old Goth kid, so stoked,” she recalls with a laugh during a recent interview for the cover story in our new issue . She remembers providing research assistance on a cover about the Jonas Brothers – and working in a cubicle across from a wall with a giant painting of Kurt. “Yeah,” Frances says with a grin and mock-exasperation, “looking at my dad every day.” ( Preview the cover story and listen to a previously unheard Cobain song here .) EXCLUSIVE: With New York City gradually emerging from the worst of the coronavirus pandemic, one film-biz sign of life is a series of Oscar-nominated movies hitting the city’s big screens. With the April 20 deadline for Oscar ballots looming, bookings are on the rise, even at one newer spot in the awards-season mix: the Queens Drive-In . “Anything that reminds people of the communal experience, we’re all for it,” one Oscar consultant told Deadline. “We have all been stuck inside, so now even if we have to get creative and deal with safety restrictions, it’s totally worth it to try to break through and make a connection.” Related Story NYC Cinemas, Hobbled By 25% Capacity Cap, Need 50% By Memorial Day, 75% By July 4 Or "We Just Can't Make It" - NATO NY President … [Read more...] about Oscar Campaigners Flock To Queens Drive-In As In-Person Screenings Resume Citywide Ahead Of Ballot Deadline
The Battle Over The Filibuster Counters The Myth Of ‘Mr. Smith’
Sen. Joe Manchin (D-W. VA.) seemingly dashed any hopes of Democrats abolishing the filibuster anytime soon when he wrote last week that the legislative maneuver was a “critical tool” to protecting “our democratic form of government.” That’s a far different view than that of former President Barack Obama, who called it a “Jim Crow relic,” along with a slew of other critics. But an idealized view of the filibuster as a force for good isn’t an outlier; it’s the way that many students, of past generations and even today, are first exposed to it, via the 1939 Frank Capra classic Mr. Smith Goes to Washington. As much of a relic as the movie is, the climatic scene, in which Jefferson Smith (Jimmy Stewart) stages a nearly 24- hour filibuster against corruption and back-room dealing among his colleagues, has endured. It’s still used as a teaching tool and, in coverage of the latest debate, comes up as a common pop culture reference point. It’s helped shape perceptions of what … [Read more...] about The Battle Over The Filibuster Counters The Myth Of ‘Mr. Smith’

Jared Leto Is Unrecognizable in House of Gucci First Look Set Photos
Academy award winner Jared Leto has undergone another mind-blowing transformation for his role in the upcoming biographical drama House of Gucci , with the actor left unrecognisable under prosthetics and other such movie magic. Leto will star in the movie as famous fashion designer Paolo Gucci and has been seen sporting receding grey hair and a very fetching lavender corduroy suit. His usually chiselled, leading man face has been completely hidden under heavy wrinkles and a substantial amount of fat under his chin. Frankly, you'd be hard pressed to guess it was Leto if you're life depended on it. Fans have been having a field day thanks to Leto's new look, with some very impressed with the results; "Amazing job I should say... I wonder what he thinks abt this transformation tho' can't wait to hear from his lips, his thoughts etc... he was thrilled w/Albert Sparma but this one is mind blowing." While others find them largely redundant; "He looks like Robert Duvall. Just hire … [Read more...] about Jared Leto Is Unrecognizable in House of Gucci First Look Set Photos
