A Vancouver soft-rock radio outlet is raging today after two popular DJs were fired. Chances are, the station brass is equally unthrilled as KISS-FM has been spinning only Rage Against the Machine ’s “Killing in the Name” ever since. Over and over. Among the song’s key lyrics is, of course, “F*ck you, I won’t do what you tell me” — repeated multiple times at the end. The morning duo of Kevin Lim and Sonia Sidhu, aka Kevin & Sonia, were off the air last week, but Lim tweeted on the station’s official account early this morning that that would be back today and there was a “big announcement” coming. It turned out to be that the pair has been let go after five years on the air, which Lim tweeted at 8:39 a.m. PT. Shortly after the latter tweet landed, began to spin the incendiary 30-year-old Rage track on repeat — pausing only to take listener “requests.” Those requests have been for, you guessed it, “Killing in the Name.” The song, with the offending expletive … [Read more...] about After Popular DJ Duo’s Firing, Vancouver Radio Station Has Played ‘Killing In The Name’ For 10-Plus Hours
In Orlam, the surrealistic new novel written in poetic verse by alt-rock firebrand Polly Jean Harvey, a nine-year-old girl named Ira-Abel, in England’s Dorset region, swoons over ghosts and encounters real-life villains, all as foretold by her village’s oracle, Orlam, the eviscerated eye of Ira’s pet lamb. Harvey, who was once a nine-year-old Dorset girl herself, wrote the entire work in the region’s dialect — rendering words like “grievance” as “engripement” and “hot” as “hetful” — which makes the whole story even more delightfully strange. (She also included a standard-English translation of the book, which comes out in the U.S. on Aug. 1 .) Although she previously published another book of poetry, The Hollow of the Hand , in 2015, Harvey has since honed her skills under the mentorship of Scottish poet Don Paterson for a period of three years, during which she developed many of the ideas in Orlam . “Learning the craft of poetry writing seemed to be a very natural … [Read more...] about ‘It Doesn’t Feel Dark to Me’: PJ Harvey on Her Surreal New Novel, Growing Older, and the Beauty of Ugliness

At first, the TikTok video seems like your average makeup tutorial: Alexis, a content creator with glowing skin, perfectly groomed brows, and a scrunchie on her wrist, is applying blush to her cheekbones as “Flesh” by Ghostmane plays in the background. Then the text flashes on screen: “If you’re a female in America worried about your future, just know there is an herb for every ‘situation.'” A list of herbs then flashes onscreen, including pennyroyal , blue cohosh, and mugwort.
