But denim’s dark side is now for everyone. The best black jeans are an easy-to-wear part of any wardrobe, no matter your personal style. Musicians have long been adopting and popularizing certain pieces of clothing, but the rise of black jeans was different. Janelle Monáe On Writing “Turntables”, Supporting Stacey Abrams & Creating “More Stories Of Black Joy”
Got a new agenda, With a new dream, I’m kicking out the old regime, Liberation, elevation, education. The lyrics of Janelle Monáe’s Oscar shortlisted song, “Turntables” are a call for accountability flavored with positive promise. Written for the Liz Garbus and Lisa Cortés-directed documentary about Georgia political activist Stacey Abrams, All In: The Fight for Democracy , Monáe’s song aligns in every sense with Abrams’ single-minded refusal to tolerate insidious, endemic and overwhelming voter suppression following her 2018 run for governor of Georgia. Rapping about a “new dream”, Monáe speaks to the long-sought turning of a societal and political tide in this country. The call came early on in the pandemic. As an Abrams fan and a Georgia voter herself, Monáe had previously offered to help Abrams in any way she could. But when the documentary team approached, Monáe was, she says, “not in a healthy space mentally”. Not only were her tour dates disappearing and … [Read more...] about Janelle Monáe On Writing “Turntables”, Supporting Stacey Abrams & Creating “More Stories Of Black Joy”
NYC Art House Movie Theaters Awaken After Year Of Hibernation, But One Holds The Popcorn
Popcorn and all other concessions will not be sold at the IFC Center , at least for now. But films, actual films, will be projected on all five of its screens beginning Friday for the first time in nearly a year. “The room will be black — you won’t be on your phone!” Kajillionaire director Miranda July marveled in a video testimonial. That’s a dramatic change from the home viewing environment during Covid-19. The IFC, a Greenwich Village mainstay that took over the abandoned Waverly Theater site in 2005, is among a select number of New York art houses reopening today. The economics are daunting. With state coronavirus restrictions capping attendance at 25% capacity, theaters can expect no more than a few dozen ticket buyers per show in the early going. Even at such modest scale, the market will be watched closely by the film business, which got a lift last weekend with Tom & Jerry grossing $14.1 million despite also streaming on HBO Max. Tim Wu, A Proponent Of Breaking Up Tech Giants, Joins Joe Biden’s White House National Economic Council
Tim Wu , a professor and lawyer known for coining the term “ net neutrality ” and for writing authoritative media books like The Master Switch , has been named to a White House post. He will serve on President Joe Biden ’s National Economic Council, leaving his post at Columbia University to become special assistant to the president for technology and competition policy. The position will not give him the authority other administration officials have in terms of antitrust matters and related issues but it will offer a larger, formal platform for positions he has taken over the years. There has been bipartisan support in recent years for bringing down the regulatory hammer on big tech . Federal lawsuits pending against Facebook and Google are expected to gear up under Biden. Even the executives leading the companies have recognized publicly that regulation should play a more prominent role in shaping the companies. Biden’s exact plan for how to do that is not yet fully … [Read more...] about Tim Wu, A Proponent Of Breaking Up Tech Giants, Joins Joe Biden’s White House National Economic Council
Landmark Sunshine, New York Film Mainstay, Will Fade To Black On January 21
Landmark has confirmed Sunday, January 21 as the date when the Sunshine art house will screen its final reel, Deadline has learned. The five-screen complex, which opened in 2001, has been a hotspot in New York for cinephiles and specialty distributors alike but will now make way for retail development. While the theater’s exit has long been expected, the news adds to an already melancholy winter for the New York specialty film business. The Lincoln Plaza Cinemas on the Upper West Side, a longtime indie temple, is also closing this month and its famed programmer Dan Talbot died last month. Ted Mundorff , CEO of Landmark Theatres , took a pragmatic tone when reached by Deadline. “We’ve known it was coming,” he said. No special programming or commemoration is planned on the final weekend, he confirmed. “There’s nothing to celebrate.” Landmark, which now has 260 screens in 53 sites across the U.S., will turn its attentions to nurturing its newest New York location, on … [Read more...] about Landmark Sunshine, New York Film Mainstay, Will Fade To Black On January 21
