The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has taken the very unusual step of releasing Oscars shortlists in nine categories at once for the first time ever. Previously they sent out shortlists separately and at different times. This is also the first year that Original Score and Best Song have been included in the shortlisting process by eliminating all but 15 contenders in each of those categories going forward. In past years the Academy simply released a list of eligible scores and songs ,but didn’t eliminate any of them until Oscar nominations were actually announced. Oscar winner Denzel Washington , gymnast Simone Biles and the late Apple co-founder Steve Jobs are among this year’s 17 recipients of the Presidential Medal of Freedom , the White House announced today. Presented to individuals who have “made exemplary contributions to the prosperity, values, or security of the United States, world peace or other significant societal, public or private endeavors,” the Medal is the nation’s highest civilian honor. Other recipients this year include the late Sen. John McCain, former Congresswoman Gabby Giffords and Olympic gold medalist Megan Rapinoe. See the complete list below.
