On the Charts: A Tribe Called Quest Score First Number One in 20 Years
Twenty years and three months after A Tribe Called Quest last topped the Billboard 200 with Beats, Rhymes and Life, the hip-hop group returned to the Number One spot with their “final” album We Got It From Here… Thank You 4 Your Service. We Got It From Here…, a sendoff to the group’s late Phife Dawg, sold 135,000 total copies in its debut week, giving A Tribe Called Quest its second Number One album. Bruno Mars: The Private Anxiety of a Pop Perfectionist
“I’ve been living in this damn box for 18 months!” It’s late July at Glenwood Place, a recording studio in Burbank, California. Bruno Mars is in the courtyard – white T-shirt, Versace cap over curls, white slip-on sneakers, no socks – smoking his umpteenth cigarette of the day and trying with every bone in his roughly five-foot-five body to will his third album to completion. “It’s right there, man,” says Mars, 31. “I’ve got to finish one song and tighten up the bridge on another, and I’m pretty much done. I want to be finished by the middle of next month. I do have a deadline. And this shit ain’t cheap!” The song he needs to finish is one he’s been working on with Skrillex, whom he brought in to add some pizazz to a track he’s been struggling with for months. “[Skrillex] is a sonic genius, and his version is amazing,” Mars says. “There’s just something that’s … [Read more...] about Bruno Mars: The Private Anxiety of a Pop Perfectionist
Watch Lady Gaga’s Drone-Assisted Hits Medley at Super Bowl 51 Halftime Show
Lady Gaga delivered an explosive greatest hits medley at the Super Bowl 51 Halftime Show. The pop chameleon tore through “Poker Face,” “Born This Way,” “Telephone,” “Just Dance,” “Million Reasons” and “Bad Romance,” assisted by a stage-full of backing dancers and illuminated by a sky-full of starry drones. Tony Bennett, who collaborated with Gaga on the 2014 jazz album Cheek to Cheek, delivered a brief video intro. Gaga then opened things up by belting an operatic “God Bless America” before dropping into the arena to the synth strains of “Poker Face.” Throughout the epic performance, Gaga jumped from the microphone to keytar to piano, shouted out her parents in the audience, employed Thriller-esque choreography and donned some glammy football gear. She closed the show with a bad-ass mic drop and stage jump – a punk rock finale to a set of pure pop bliss. During a … [Read more...] about Watch Lady Gaga’s Drone-Assisted Hits Medley at Super Bowl 51 Halftime Show
