After experiencing the grueling Clash of the Titans remake in 3D and slogging through the almost 'too dark to even tell what was going on' Avengers: Age of Ultron in the so-called 'immersive format' at the Arc Light Cinema in Hollywood, which is supposed to be one of the premiere theater destinations in the country, I was ready to give up on 3D altogether, which I know many critics abandoned long ago. But whenever I'm invited to a press screening and given the option, I always choose 3D anyway. The idea of it still appeals to the kid inside me. And my belief is, while I may see the movie again, I'll probably never re-watch it in 3D. I keep expecting to see a movie where 3D isn't just an afterthought slapped onto any given movie to boost ticket sales. Where the director actually uses it as a tool to tell a story. Since 3D really hit its stride at the beginning of this decade, I've been waiting for that movie where I walk out and go, 'Now that was a 3D movie worth paying for!' Guess … [Read more...] about Ghostbusters Review: The Best 3D Experience of The Summer

Bollywood Director Vikas Bahl Accused of Sexual Misconduct, Phantom Films Dissolved
Bahl, along with directors Anurag Kashyap and Vikramaditya Motwane, was one of the founders of Phantom, the edgy production company behind Netflix's first Indian series 'Sacred Games'. In what is being seen as the beginning of Bollywood's #MeToo moment, Indian director Vikas Bahl has been accused of sexual misconduct. The allegations, which were detailed in a Huffington Post story published on Saturday, came soon after the dissolution of Phantom Films, the edgy production company behind two-part epic Gangs of Wasseypur and Netflix's first Indian series Sacred Games which Bahl co-founded with fellow directors Anurag Kashyap, Vikramaditya Motwane and producer Madhu Mantena. Renée Zellweger & Her Awards Season Return In ‘Judy’: Why You’re Gonna Love Her, Come Rain Or Come Shine
To riff off LL Cool J, don’t call it a comeback, she’s been with us for years. After a six year break from the big screen between 2010-2016, Renée Zellweger storms back into awards season with a tour de force turn as the tormented, but resilient, Judy Garland in the third act of her career in Roadside Attractions’ Judy. It was 1968 and the Wizard of Oz actress was penniless, with no choice but to become the marquee act at London dinner theater Talk of the Town; her personal life coming apart at the seams and drugs and alcohol continuing to take their toll, even eating into her onstage performance. Zellweger disappeared into the part with the same granular nuance and pitch perfect detail she has delivered previously in such in her rounded repertoire of characters including her best supporting actress Oscar winning turn as Ruby Thewes in Cold Mountain, and her Oscar nominated and award lauded turns in Chicago and Bridget Jones’s Dairy. Horror Auteur Takashi Miike Says There’s More Romance Than Violence In His Films
The prolific Japanese filmmaker explained his method at a masterclass held during the Singapore International Film Festival. Maybe the trick to getting your head around the career of Takashi Miike is first to realize that the maverick Japanese director hasn’t tried to redefine genres across a 100-plus-project career. Instead he’s tried to defy them. “My style is that I have no style,” Miike says with a laugh, when asked how best to describe his film-making technique. Miike hosted a master class in front of an enthralled and packed room of fellow filmmakers and fans as the Singapore International Film Festival drew to a close last Sunday, after being handed an honorary award for life achievement the night before. The 59-year-old also brought with him his latest film, the romance-tinged actioner First Love, and across the master class and later, sitting in a nearby café as he waited for lunch to be served, Miike did his very best to explain his methods. … [Read more...] about Horror Auteur Takashi Miike Says There’s More Romance Than Violence In His Films
