Solidarity in the Skies, and Everything Beneath: Sara Nelson on How to Build a Better Country

· March 6, 2021 ·

Sara Nelson believes in solidarity: When she speaks, she talks about collectivity, of worker power, of bread and roses. As the head of the American Flight Attendants, Nelson, who started working as a flight attendant for United Airlines in 1996, can wield strength in numbers — the union represents over 50,000 workers at 20 different airlines. During the Trump era, it meant standing up to the former president on immigrant family separation and the 2019 federal government shutdown . Under a new administration, Nelson is looking to a brighter labor future in America, as she believes the movement will capitalize on autoworkers’ and teachers’ strike victories, and an evolving sense of urgency among the working class. Disney’s Merlin Saga Targets Director Ridley Scott

· January 4, 2018 ·

According to reports, Disney is in negotiation with Ridley Scott to helm The Merlin Saga along with his production company, Scott Free. It is believed that the Merlin Saga will be Scott's next project, but nothing has been officially confirmed by Disney or Ridley Scott. All the Money in the World as well as Alien: Covenant were both directed by Scott in 2017 and All the Money in the World is seeing quite a bit of acclaim, even after removing Kevin Spacey from the project and replacing him with Christopher Plummer at the absolute last minute. Variety reports that Ridley Scott and Disney are in negotiations for the director to helm the Merlin Saga , which Academy Award winning screenwriter Philippa Boyens wrote the script for, based off of T.A. Barron's books. Boyens is best known for working with Peter Jackson and Fran Walsh on all six Middle-earth films as well as on King Kong and The Lovely Bones . Barron started the Merlin Saga in 1996 with The Lost Years … [Read more...] about Disney’s Merlin Saga Targets Director Ridley Scott

Zack Snyder Talks Knightmare Connection Between Batman v Superman and Justice League

· March 5, 2021 ·

When Zack Snyder took back Justice League , he decided to ensure that every bit of his envisioned storyline should be added to the cut which has led to an epic 4-hour melee of DC superhero fun. Much of the new material comes from changing character designs via VFX work, reshooting sequences for better detail, and even brand new sequences with actors Jared Leto as Joker and Joe Manganiello as Deathstroke. Though we haven't seen any footage of Deathstroke yet, a glimpse of Knightmare Joker in the trailer has hyped up audiences and has filled the web with countless theories about the Snyderverse. Adding Joker to the narrative means that for the first time, DCEU versions of Batman and his arch-nemesis would share a scene together, not as enemies but as allies. ‘Raya And The Last Dragon’ Debuting To $8M As Pic Hits Disney+ & NYC Reopens: Why The Industry Is Greatly Concerned

· March 6, 2021 ·

Saturday AM Update: Updated with NYC B.O. data Even with three new wide releases at this weekend’s box office, and New York City finally reopening, numbers still aren’t at pre-pandemic levels, but there’s a lot of drama going on. Let’s start with Disney ’s theatrical day and date Disney+ release of animated pic Raya and the Last Dragon which looks to be leading the weekend with a studio-reported $2.5M Friday and an industry weekend estimate of $8.3M at 2,045 theaters. These numbers are slightly less than the $3M Friday and $9M-$10M we were hearing about, and they’re definitely less than the $14.1M that Warner Bros’ same day HBO Max release of Tom & Jerry posted last weekend. Raya ‘s opening weekend is also less than Croods: A New Age ‘s 3-day opening over its Thanksgiving stretch which posted $9.7M. And that’s definitely because Disney did not reach a deal with No. 3 chain Cinemark, as we first told you (thus, losing around 250 bookings), Harkins, and … [Read more...] about ‘Raya And The Last Dragon’ Debuting To $8M As Pic Hits Disney+ & NYC Reopens: Why The Industry Is Greatly Concerned

The Real Case of Censorship That Proves ‘Cancel Culture’ Outrage Is Bullshit

· March 6, 2021 ·

The conservative outrage about cancel culture this past week reached a fevered pitch. Right-wing politicians have used their CPAC speeches and social media accounts to decry people being forced to change what they say in the name of mob sentiments. Culture war commentators in newspapers and online outlets have written lengthy broadsides against this current form of political correctness. Fox News has seemingly spent more time on the issue than the pandemic that still grips the country. This rightwing focus has been couched in the honorable defense of free speech and free thought. Those are fundamental principles of this country, no doubt, but don’t be fooled — American conservatives have no interest in these abstract principles. Instead, all they care about is defending a time when racism, sexism, and anti-LGBT sentiments were commonplace and acceptable.
