Anthony Fenech Detroit Free Press Published 6:00 AM EST Nov 8, 2018 CARLSBAD, Calif. — The situations aren't exactly alike, but the Detroit Tigers face the same challenge with Nicholas Castellanos that they did with J.D. Martinez two offseasons ago. Castellanos, the homegrown hitter who is one of the team's few good players, is one season away from free agency; he should draw significant trade interest this off-season. There are have been no talks about a contract extension — the rebuilding Tigers aren’t in a position to spend big right now — so the likelihood is high that 2019 will be Castellanos’ final season in Detroit. But in trying to maximize his trade value, there is also a chance the Tigers trade Castellanos this winter, given the market and teams' heightened interest in a full season of his services, rather than a couple of months. Tigers general manager Al Avila said on Wednesday evening at the General Managers’ Meetings that … [Read more...] about Detroit Tigers’ best time to trade Castellanos could be now

By CAROLYN HAX, SYNDICATED COLUMNIST Updated 10:52 am, Sunday, April 22, 2018 Photo: Yakovliev, Getty Images Adapted from a recent online discussion. Dear Carolyn: This week I was in a discussion with a bunch of other third-grade parents about what our kids know about sex. The vast majority of these parents said their children were "clueless" and they wanted to maintain their kids' innocence. I was one of the few people who had even had conversations with my child about reproduction, consent and puberty. Most were taking the "I'll talk about it when my child asks" approach. I don't go out of my way to raise this subject with my daughter, but I do look for appropriate opportunities to initiate these conversations. I don't know that a child always knows how to bring these topics up. We have talked about inappropriate touching and rape but also the fact that adults engage in certain activities because it feels … [Read more...] about Carolyn Hax: When is the best time to have ‘the talk’ with kids?
By Mike Moffitt, SFGATE Published 1:12 pm, Monday, April 2, 2018 Now Playing: You actually can afford to travel. Media: TPSY When you know you're going to need to fly somewhere — for example, to visit your relatives on the opposite coast — when is the best time to buy a ticket? Waiting until the last minute is obviously a bad move. The price can easily double. But buying far in advance can also be unwise. Early birds often pay a premium to lock in seats. So what is the sweet spot? The travel site CheapAir.com wanted to find out. Its 2018 Airfare study analyzed 917 million different flights listed on its site. The answer is, it depends. The study found that on average, the best time to buy an airline ticket in 2017 was 70 days in advance, a couple of weeks longer than it was in 2016 (54 days). But the optimal time varies by season. Say you're planning a vacation in the summer, the most popular travel season for Americans. The study found that the … [Read more...] about The best time to buy a plane ticket, according to study of 917M flights
