Prolific Japanese auteur Takashi Miike’s latest feature is First Love, the wild genre romp that follows a young boxer and a call girl who get caught up in a drug-smuggling scheme over the course of one night in Tokyo. The pic premiered in Cannes’ Directors’ Fortnight program and has also played Toronto, Busan, London and Fantastic Fest. This week it is screening at the International Film Festival & Awards Macao (IFFAM), the growing event held in the Chinese gambling capital. Deadline caught up with Miike to chat about how his work has changed over the course of a 30-year, 100+ film career. DEADLINE: You still direct 1-2 movies every year, where do you find the stamina? Kanye West Announces New Opera to Debut in Miami
Kanye West has announced the premiere of his new opera, Mary, which is set to debut on December 8th at Miami Marine Stadium in Miami, Florida. It follows the staging of his first opera, Nebuchadnezzar, in Los Angeles, California last month. West announced the news on Thursday evening via Twitter. His tweet included Bible verses Luke 1:30-31. “And the angel said unto her: fear not, Mary: For thou hast found favour with God. And, behold, thou shalt conceive in thy womb, and bring forth a son, and shalt call his name Jesus.” Vanessa Beecroft, who directed Nebuchadnezzar, reprises her role for Mary and it will also feature music from West’s Sunday Service choir. Prolific producer and former top film and top executive Leonard Goildberg, who passed away Wednesday at the age of 85, never slowed down. At the time of his death, he was still working as executive producer on the hit CBS cop family drama Blue Bloods starring Tom Selleck. Blue Bloods originated more than a decade ago with Goldberg pitching the very basic idea to then-CBS Entertainment President Nina Tassler. It was also Goldberg who later suggested Selleck for the role of the Reagan family patriarch, Commissioner Frank Reagan. Selleck has shared publicly that he was reluctant to commit to an ongoing series at the time but was drawn to the pilot script and signed on. Goldberg was a big believer in Blue Bloods even when the pilot flew largely under the radar during the 2010 pilot season.
