Bad Lieutenant: Port of Call New Orleans (2009) Amongst the pantheon of Nic Cage-Esque performances, Bad Lieutenant: Port of Call New Orleans ranks somewhere near the tippy top. Cage stars as detective Terence McDonagh, a man who has certainly seen better days. He has a nasty painkiller addiction, courtesy of an injury he sustained while rescuing a prisoner during Hurricane Katrina. Plus, there's his alcoholic father, his boozy wife, and his prostitute girlfriend. If that weren't already enough for him to navigate, he's just been saddled with a rookie partner intent on getting in his way. With Petty’s death, three of the five Wilburys are gone (Orbison died in 1988), and the Heartbreakers have lost their voice and leader. But, Tench says, “I never want this guy to be thought of as ‘OK, we’ve put him in the file, that’s done.’ Because he resonates. There’s a reason why he was in the Wilburys with Bob, Roy and a Beatle. Britney might not have known it in 1999, but she was right. Emailing your heart and getting freaky on camera is the best we can do in 2020. … [Read more...] about Did Britney Spears See the Future With ‘E-Mail My Heart’?

The jungle stretched from horizon to horizon, thick, swampy and deadly. Armed security guards patrolled the few trails, and it was their business to know where an escapee would look for food and water. Rumor had it that captured escapees had had their arms broken. Toward the end, most of them were simply placed in the euphemistically named Extra Care Unit, where they were drugged senseless for a week at a time. Patients emerged from ECU unable to carry on a conversation, and their faces were blank, as if they had been temporarily lobotomized. … [Read more...] about In the Valley of the Shadow of Death: Guyana After the Jonestown Massacre
