Following the Supreme Court’s decision to overturn Roe v. Wade effectively banning abortions immediately in certain states, a plethora of companies have promised to provide travel expenses to staff who live in a restricted state and want access to an abortion in a state where it is still legal. Netflix, Disney, Dick’s Sporting Goods and Nike are just a handful of companies who are joining companies such as Live Nation, Sony Music, Amazon, Tesla, Citigroup, Levi Strauss, and Starbucks who had previously said it would support its respective staff who seek an abortion by providing travel expenses. In an email obtained by Rolling Stone , Live Nation CEO Michael Rapino told employees on May 12 — just over a week after news had initially leaked that the Supreme Court would shut down Roe v. Wade — that the company would cover the travel costs to its U.S. employees for “women’s healthcare services.” “Access to women’s health services is absolutely vital,” Rapino wrote. “We … [Read more...] about Sony Music, Live Nation, Netflix, More Offer Staff Travel Reimbursement for Abortions

Maren Morris on Abortion Ruling: ‘Tomorrow I Will Fight, But Today I Am Grieving’
In light of the Supreme Court’s 6-3 ruling Friday morning overturning Roe v. Wade and allowing states to restrict or ban abortion at any point during a pregnancy, a handful of country music artists have spoken out in opposition to the decision. Chief among them is Maren Morris , who detailed her own journey to becoming a mother in an exclusive statement to Rolling Stone . Morris, 32, says she waited until she was 29 and financially stable to try to have a child with her husband, fellow songwriter Ryan Hurd. The “Circles Around This Town” singer planned out details ranging from where her son would be born to what school he would one day attend. “Every choice, every decision, a thoughtful one,” Morris says. “Today, I hold my two year old son with tears streaming down my face because all my love and planning still wasn’t enough to protect him from being born in a country who could do this to women. Women, the ones who gave each Supreme Court Justice on the bench the … [Read more...] about Maren Morris on Abortion Ruling: ‘Tomorrow I Will Fight, But Today I Am Grieving’
‘Obi-Wan Kenobi’ Was Stuck in Star Wars’ Past. Here’s How ‘Star Trek: Strange New Worlds’ Does It Better
This post contains spoilers for the whole first season of Obi-Wan Kenobi (now streaming on Disney+ ) and the season to date of Star Trek : Strange New Worlds (now streaming on Paramount+ ). There’s plenty of overlap between the audiences for Star Wars and Star Trek , yet for decades the two fan bases have been pitted against each other like reluctant gladiators dropped into an arena (whether the one where a shirtless Captain Kirk fought in “The Gamesters of Triskelion” or the one where Padme Amidala got her midriff exposed in Attack of the Clones ). Which is superior, they have argued: the action-adventure bent of Star Wars or the more philosophical science fiction of Star Trek ? Which stoic group of people is more compelling: the mystical Jedi knights, or the logic-driven Vulcan race? Is Jim Kirk a more charming rascal than Han Solo? And on and on and on. This spring saw the arrival of new streaming series from both franchises — Obi-Wan Kenobi and … [Read more...] about ‘Obi-Wan Kenobi’ Was Stuck in Star Wars’ Past. ‘The Janes’ And ‘Reversing Roe’ Directors On Supreme Court’s Roe V. Wade Ruling And What The Future Holds: “Just The Tip Of The Iceberg”
EXCLUSIVE: Filmmakers Ricki Stern and Anne Lundberg have seen this day coming. For a long time. Their 2108 Netflix documentary Reversing Roe examined how right-wing activists, politicians and jurists were steadily chipping away at abortion rights across the country, with the goal of eventually overturning Roe v. Wade. Today it happened, in a 6-3 Supreme Court decision that tossed out Roe, permitting states to ban or severely restrict abortion. “I think there was no surprise,” Stern said in an interview with Deadline after the ruling was announced. She said she felt “just absolute sadness and just despair, truly, because it’s the beginning of many, many kinds of Supreme Court decisions that, personally, I think are going to set us back. And as the film illustrates, this is a very politically charged issue, abortion rights. This is really about power and [ignores] the lives of many women who are going to be hurt by this decision.” The new HBO documentary The … [Read more...] about ‘The Janes’ And ‘Reversing Roe’ Directors On Supreme Court’s Roe V. Hollywood’s Unions Condemn SCOTUS Ruling Overturning Roe V Wade; SAG-AFTRA, WGA, IATSE & Actors’ Equity, More Join Chorus Of Boos
UPDATED with latest: Hollywood’s unions are reacting Friday to the Supreme Court’s decision to overturn Roe v Wade. SAG-AFTRA has called the decision “archaic and dangerous,” and vowed to “fight to protect women’s right to choice.” “Anyone who believes in the right of women to make their own healthcare decisions should be outraged with today’s archaic and dangerous ruling,” the guild said in a statement Friday. “Every American deserves and is entitled to an equal right to healthcare choice. Today, the United States Supreme Court abandoned that principle in a ruling that empowers states to enact draconian restrictions on healthcare choice and destroy lives, if we allow it. We will continue to fight to ensure the overwhelming majority voice of the people is heard in state and federal legislative bodies. We have the collective power to make certain today’s decision does not overcome the will of the people. SAG-AFTRA will fight to protect women’s right to choice and … [Read more...] about Hollywood’s Unions Condemn SCOTUS Ruling Overturning Roe V Wade; SAG-AFTRA, WGA, IATSE & Actors’ Equity, More Join Chorus Of Boos

Conan Gray Has Many Many Feelings — And Manages Them Quite Impressively on ‘Superache’
Calling an album Superache is about as subtle as slapping a “Feelings Ahead” sign on its cover, but Conan Gray reached the vanguard of twentysomething pop by always putting his emotions right up front. On his second album, the 23-year-old YouTuber turned pop star reveals himself to be an astute observer of the human condition, recounting everyday scenes and highlighting those split-second details in interactions that can make a warm rapport between two people transform into permafrost. Gray has a lithe voice that simultaneously possesses the intensity of Shawn Mendes and the sweetness of Carly Rae Jepsen, a potent combination that adds both anguish and romanticism to his music. Some of the most gripping songs on Superache find Gray almost dispassionately describing his own life’s ups and downs before lowering the boom. On the longing “Footnote,” Gray recounts moments when he and someone he’s close to were mistaken for a couple, his observations (“They think we’re a … [Read more...] about Conan Gray Has Many Many Feelings — And Manages Them Quite Impressively on ‘Superache’
