Rush Limbaugh Did His Best to Ruin America
When Rush Limbaugh , the Great Bloviater of the AM dial, signed off from the “Limbaugh Institute for Advanced Conservative Studies,” two days before Christmas, he warned the faithful in the raspy remains of his famous trumpeting baritone: “The day is gonna come, folks, where I’m not going to be able to do this anymore.” For 13 terrible days in Trumpland — while the mad president that Limbaugh helped make possible was flailing for survival, while the faithful were trying to “ stop the steal ” of the election, and even while the Republicans blew their Senate majority in the Georgia runoffs — the loudest voice in the right-wing echo chamber remained silent. By the time January 6th rolled around, even the millions of fans praying for a miracle cancer cure had to figure: If Rush had passed up the chance to fearmonger about Raphael Warnock’s old sermons and mock Jon Ossoff’s hair, well, he must be finished. At least with his trademark golden microphone, if not with this earthly … [Read more...] about Rush Limbaugh Did His Best to Ruin America

The Highwaymen: The Fights and Friendship of Country’s Great Supergroup
When the Highwaymen recorded “Desperados Waiting for a Train,” written by visionary songwriter Guy Clark, who died earlier this week, the supergroup of Johnny Cash , Willie Nelson , Waylon Jennings and Kris Kristofferson landed on their most poignant song. While Jimmy Webb’s “Highwayman” may have been the foursome’s signature, Clark’s “Desperados,” released on their 1985 debut album, dovetailed with their own outlaw legacy: that of aging icons who indulged the young guns their bravado while still beating them on the draw. They may not have been pushing 80 as in Clark’s lyrics (all four were only in their late 40s or early 50s), but, especially now, it’s impossible to think of the Highwaymen as anything but elder statesmen of country music. “They need to be up there on the big rock with the presidents,” says Emmylou Harris, echoing a sentiment near the end of “Desperados Waiting for a Train”: “ to me, he’s one of the heroes of this country ,” goes the line, sung by Cash. … [Read more...] about The Highwaymen: The Fights and Friendship of Country’s Great Supergroup

It has been more than 12 years since Tom Holland made his West End theatre debut as Billy Elliot in the musical adaptation of Stephen Daldry’s modern classic film; a half lifetime for the 24-year-old actor who has spent the time since forging a career as a major star. Of course, his trajectory was helped along by his casting in the Marvel Cinematic Universe as Spider-Man in Captain America: Civil War , but it was his spirit and energy that breathed new life into a superhero who had already weathered two big-screen adaptations. He reunites with directors Anthony and Joe Russo this year for Cherry , which, in Holland’s own words, represents the greatest challenge of his career to date.
