For an American teen whose parents were deported to Mexico, an agonizing choice
TOLUCA, Mexico — She wakes in the top bunk, and there they are: McKenna, Izzy, Sylvia, Molly and other friends from “over there,” in Michigan, smiling down on her from photos clipped to a string of tiny white lights on the wall. Happy lights, happy memories. From before she had to leave America. She brushes her long, brown hair and pulls on her school uniform: blue sweater and skirt, white knee socks. Another day of struggling, in a classroom packed with more than 60 kids, to study logic and algebra in Spanish. It’s her parents’ language, but it’s not hers. Neither is this country. And now, at 16, Lulu has to choose. Here: Her mother and father, both deported, and her little brother, Bryan. They can’t believe Lulu would leave, and she can’t believe she’s considering it.“They are my whole life,” she says. There: Ann Arbor, where she was born, the only home she’s ever known. Her top-notch high school, with small … [Read more...] about For an American teen whose parents were deported to Mexico, an agonizing choice
Sir Patrick Stewart is back in Huddersfield to talk about his remarkable career
Sir Patrick Stewart in pictures 0 Have your say Sir Patrick Stewart is one the country’s best-known actors. Chris Bond caught up with him as he returns to Yorkshire to talk about his life on the stage and screen. IT was books, rather than the stars of the silver screen, that hooked Sir Patrick Stewart as a youngster.“They were everything to me because we didn’t have any in our house when I was growing up apart from a few war books of my father’s,” he says. “A while back I found a sealed off box which I opened and it was full of old paperbacks. A lot of them were dog-eared and I was going to give them away but then I realised this pile of books, and there was about 40 or 50 of them, were a record of my childhood reading. I would read books above my age, so there was Tolstoy and Dickens and all kinds of American authors and so forth, and that was the beginning of my cultural education.”The Mirfield-born actor is back on home turf … [Read more...] about Sir Patrick Stewart is back in Huddersfield to talk about his remarkable career

By Mike Moffitt, SFGATE Published 1:12 pm, Monday, April 2, 2018 Now Playing: You actually can afford to travel. Media: TPSY When you know you're going to need to fly somewhere — for example, to visit your relatives on the opposite coast — when is the best time to buy a ticket? Waiting until the last minute is obviously a bad move. The price can easily double. But buying far in advance can also be unwise. Early birds often pay a premium to lock in seats. So what is the sweet spot? The travel site CheapAir.com wanted to find out. Its 2018 Airfare study analyzed 917 million different flights listed on its site. The answer is, it depends. The study found that on average, the best time to buy an airline ticket in 2017 was 70 days in advance, a couple of weeks longer than it was in 2016 (54 days). But the optimal time varies by season. Say you're planning a vacation in the summer, the most popular travel season for Americans. The study found that the … [Read more...] about The best time to buy a plane ticket, according to study of 917M flights
The Ten Best Comedy Shows in Denver in April (Plus a May Sneak Peek)
Designated Drunkard: A Comedy Drinking GameComedy RoomRoomWestword's own Byron Graham imported one of New Orleans's most delightful shows to El Charrito's Comedy RoomRoom. A rib-tickling and liver-pickling hybrid of comedy show and drinking game, the format of Designated Drunkard is fairly straightforward: Comics perform in front of an easel pad that contains a list of their foibles, mannerisms and signature jokes, and the crowd takes a drink each time the comic hits his or her prompts. April's barn-burning lineup includes Kyle Pogue, Gabby Gutierrez-Reed, Tairee Dillard, Brad Galli, New York's Danny Felts and headliner AJ Finney. Visit Designated Drunkard's Night Out page to buy tickets, $5, and find more details.
