SPOILER ALERT: This review contains details of tonight’s Star Trek Discovery debut. Having started a bit later tonight on CBS than planned due to NFL overruns, Star Trek Discovery aims to boldly take CBS All Access on a new subscriber rich adventure. After all the behind-the-camera drama, delays, secrecy and hype for the Sonequa Martin-Green -led 15-episode first season, Discovery has finally taken off. It’s a launch Leslie Moonves hopes will result in a signup windfall for CBS’ nearly 3-year-old streaming service CBS All Access. After all, Discovery is the first new small-screen installment of the Gene Roddenberry-created franchise since Enterprise premiered in 2001. And Moonves’ plan just might work. Despite its often over-explanatory scripts, jittery direction, scattered plot points, silly Beatles, Chuck Yeager and Amelia Earhart shout-outs, Discovery is conventional and solidly satisfying serialized TV that speaks to our times, as … [Read more...] about ‘Star Trek Discovery’ Review: Sonequa Martin-Green Show Solid But Thrusters Not Activated Yet For All Access’ Big Jump

Nakuul Mehta, who is currently seen playing the lead role in Bade Achhe Lagte Hain 2 , recently opened up about how social media has changed lives drastically. In an interview with Pinkvilla, the actor opened up about how kids today are engrossed in their mobile phones and do not play much. On being quizzed about how he plans on protecting his son Sufi from social media, Nakuul said, “I don’t have an absolute answer because it would be dishonest to say that now because it will be different when he is going to be 5 or 6. He is a year old now. But both me and Jankee do not encourage any digital screen time at home so we have not switched on our TVs for the last 2 years.” He went on to add, “Also because one, we wanted to cut it off from our lives. Secondly, when Sufi was born we did not want him to be exposed to this. He has only seen the phone when there is a video call and a family or a friend wants to say hi to him. But no TV, no cartoon. David Ellison’s Skydance Raises $700 Million In Funding For Film, TV Slates
BREAKING : Skydance has raised $700 million in new financing. This includes $200 million in equity from a group of investors, and a $500 million line of credit from J.P. Morgan Chase. Principal David Ellison formed the venture in 2010, when he began co-financing event films at Paramount while slowly growing his own divisions. Since then, Skydance has been a partner in many of that studio’s biggest franchises, including the Star Trek and Mission: Impossible films, World War Z, Jack Reacher and Terminator Genisys . I’ve been hearing that Ellison was reshaping his company, including moving the emphasis away from co-financing and more toward funding projects generated internally by Skydance’s film, TV, gaming, virtual reality and international divisions. And not exclusively at Paramount. Sony Pictures just stepped up to co-finance Skydance’s Mars mission film Life, which Daniel Espinosa will direct with Ryan Reynolds, Jake Gyllenhaal and Rebecca Ferguson. Ellison did … [Read more...] about David Ellison’s Skydance Raises $700 Million In Funding For Film, TV Slates

If you purchase an independently reviewed product or service through a link on our website, Rolling Stone may receive an affiliate commission. Birkenstocks have made a major comeback in recent years. The best Birkenstocks have ascended from hippie uniform to off-duty style staples and beyond, making appearances on magazine covers and on the feet of fashion week elites and normal stylish folks alike. In hindsight, the recent Birkenstock takeover makes sense: The sandals are at the intersection of classic Seventies style and “ugly-cool” shoe trends — plus, they’re part of everyone’s continuous push towards a more laidback, casual wardrobe. With premium materials and chic color options, Birkenstocks look great with everything from shorts to tailored designer clothing. Plus, stylish people have been bucking the stigma of socks with sandals by wearing their Birks in the winter with pants, a jacket, and a thick pair of socks. However, anyone who’s owned Birkenstocks knows that the … [Read more...] about RS Recommends: The Best Birkenstock Sandals We’re Wearing Right Now
What Makes Tom Cruise’s Star Shine So Brightly? Directors Share Their Insights – Cannes Disruptors
Top Gun : Maverick ’s Cannes Film Festival premiere marks another high point in the movie star career of Tom Cruise . The actor turns 60 on July 3, and unlike most leading men of that age who become quicker to call for the stunt double, Cruise shows little evidence of slowing down after 43 films. If anything, his Mission: Impossible stunts seem to grow more ambitiously dangerous, not to mention the fact that he and director Doug Liman will become the first to actually shoot a space film in space for real—aboard one of Elon Musk’s SpaceX crafts with the cooperation of NASA. So how does Cruise continue to carve such a path? “I’ve gotten to work with a number of actors who’ve had great success and long careers, Tom being at the top of the heap,” says Top Gun: Maverick director Joseph Kosinski. “He approaches every day with the enthusiasm that it’s his first movie, and at the same time puts the effort into it like it’s his last movie. That’s a good attitude … [Read more...] about What Makes Tom Cruise’s Star Shine So Brightly? Directors Share Their Insights – Cannes Disruptors

UPDATED, 9:16 AM: The final numbers are in and Super Bowl LVI was a big winner for more than just the Los Angeles Rams . NBC and the NFL are likely doing cartwheels in the end zone with Sunday’s championship game delivering a whopping 112.3 million viewers across NBC, Telemundo, Peacock, NBC Sports Digital, NFL Digital platforms and Yahoo Sports mobile properties. Streaming a Super Bowl for the first time, Peacock saw the best digital results ever for the NFL’s big game, according to NBC Sports. ‘Kevin Can Wait’ Alum Erinn Hayes To Guest Star On Season 2 Of ‘Kevin Can F**k Himself’
This is a pretty meta casting — Kevin Can Wait alum Erinn Hayes is set to guest star on the upcoming second and final season of AMC ’s Kevin Can F**k Himself . Hayes will appear in an as-yet undisclosed role alongside series stars Annie Murphy, Mary Hollis Inboden, Eric Petersen and Alex Bonifer. Hayes played James’ wife Donna on the first season of Kevin James’ CBS comedy series Kevin Can Wait . She was let go at the end of the season and replaced by James’ former King of Queens co-star Leah Remini. Hayes’ exit was met with backlash by fans, there was a Season 2 ratings decline for Kevin Can Wait, which was eventually canceled. There has been speculation that Kevin Can F**k Himself was actually a takeoff on James’ sitcom Kevin Can Wait (the male leads are both named Kevin), although neither AMC nor Kevin Can F**k Himself producers ever suggested or stated that was the case. The first season of Kevin Can F**k Himself, which is part multi-cam … [Read more...] about ‘Kevin Can Wait’ Alum Erinn Hayes To Guest Star On Season 2 Of ‘Kevin Can F**k Himself’
