Republicans Recommend Time Travel to Struggling Low-Wage Workers

· February 25, 2021 ·

Americans want a $15-per-hour minimum wage . A Reuters/Ipsos poll released Thursday found 59 recent of the nation supports the long-debated wage hike Democrats are trying to work into the coronavirus spending bill. Only 34 percent oppose it. But if we know one thing about Republicans, it’s that they’re not going to let the will of the people upend their relentless conviction to screw over poor people at every turn imaginable. Some of them are defending their opposition to bumping the minimum wage from $7.25 an hour, where it’s been since 2009 , to $15 an hour by arguing that the impoverished can simply work harder, pulling themselves up their bootstraps to take hold of the American Dream just like these senators did when they were younger, many decades ago when Americans could live on far less. Kamala Harris Could Deliver $15 Minimum Wage If Democrats Really Wanted It

· February 26, 2021 ·

There’s a moment every four years when the polls are tight and certain Democrats shake their heads, marveling at the fact that so many Americans — particularly low-wage workers — still vote for the GOP. “Don’t they know we’re the working people’s party?” they say. “Republicans only care about giving tax cuts to the rich.” Next time you hear a variation on that theme, remember this moment, when Democrats had a majority in the Senate, the opportunity to raise the wage floor for millions of Americans and lift nearly a million workers out of poverty, and — faced with a minor road block — they threw their hands in the air and gave up. On Thursday, Senate parliamentarian Elizabeth MacDonough ruled that a $15 dollar minimum wage could not be included in Democrats’ $1.9 trillion Covid-19 relief bill, because they intend to pass it through the budget reconciliation process, which only requires a simple majority, instead of trying to convince at least 10 Republicans to support the … [Read more...] about Kamala Harris Could Deliver $15 Minimum Wage If Democrats Really Wanted It

Senate Ruling: No $15 Minimum Wage in Democratic Relief Package

· February 26, 2021 ·

Will a hike in the minimum wage be part of the Democrats’ $1.9 trillion relief bill? A decision by the Senate parliamentarian has thrown a monkey wrench in progressive plans. Elizabeth MacDonough has reportedly determined that a provision to raise the wage floor for millions of Americans violates the special rules that allow the relief package to pass in the Senate with a simple majority. That does not mean a minimum wage hike is completely dead for 2021, rather that raising it will require a standalone bill, subject to the usual 60 vote threshold in the Senate. A $15 minimum wage was a stretch even for conservative Democrats. It’s unlikely a wage higher than $10 an hour can garner bipartisan support, and even that’s not a safe bet. Democrats Are Letting the Promise of a $15 Minimum Wage Slip Away

· March 1, 2021 ·

It doesn’t look like a $15 minimum wage is going to happen anytime soon. It sure seemed like it had a chance for a while there, though. Democrats wanted it in the coronavirus relief bill, which they’re gearing up to pass through reconciliation, a measure allowing the Senate to advance budget-related matters with a simple 50-vote majority rather than the 60 votes typically required to pass legislation without bringing the filibuster into play. But not just anything can be passed through reconciliation, and the it’s up to the Senate parliamentarian to decide what can stay and what has to go. She deemed last week that raising the minimum wage doesn’t qualify. There was still some hope for the the millions of Americans in 21 states still earning the federal minimum of $7.25. Sort of. Sens. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) and Ron Wyden (D-Ore.) were considering a “plan B” late last week that would have bumped up wages by penalizing corporations that didn’t pay workers a living wage. But on … [Read more...] about Democrats Are Letting the Promise of a $15 Minimum Wage Slip Away
