Rupert Murdoch’s News Corp on Wednesday said it has agreed to “an historic” three-year partnership with Google to provide journalism from its news sites around the world in return for significant payments by Google. It didn’t reveal payment terms but said publications joining the Google News Showcase include the Wall Street Journal , Barron’s , MarketWatch and the New York Post in the U.S.; The Times and The Sunday Times and The Sun in the UK; and, in Australia, a range of platforms including The Australian, the news.com.au site, Sky News, and multiple metropolitan and local titles. Compensation to publishers from Google and Facebook has become a major battleground in Australia and in some European countries. The Australian Parliament is debating legislation that would force digital platforms to negotiate with media companies on payment for using their news. ABC News has tapped Averi Harper , who covered the 2020 presidential campaign, as deputy political director. Harper joined the network in 2019, when she covered a slew of Democratic candidates in the primary and then reported on the Biden/Harris campaign in the general election. She focused on Harris’ historic nomination, and was one of the few reporters in the room when the then-senator accepted the VP nod at the Democratic National Convention. She also reported on the racial disparities of the pandemic, and was part of the team that produced the primetime special, Pandemic: A Nation Divided. She also reported from Houston for George Floyd’s funeral and contributed to the primetime special, Juneteenth: A Celebration of Overcoming. Harper will work with Political Director Rick Klein. About two years after Fox Corp. started a new chapter as a slimmed-down, TV-centric company, CEO Lachlan Murdoch observed, “It’s a good year not to own movie studios and theme parks.” In a rare appearance at a Wall Street conference, the executive weighed in on NFL negotiations, the outlook for Fox News , ad-supported streaming and other topics. Covid-19 has also posed a number of challenges to Fox, even though it doesn’t have movie or parks assets, with advertising and sports taking a dive last spring before recovering. Talks with the NFL talks have “a ways to go,” Murdoch cautioned during an online session at Morgan Stanley’s annual Technology, Media & Telecom conference. While Star Wars parodies are many and varied, Star Trek has also inspired its own fair share of space-centered films. One of the best of the bunch was 1999's Galaxy Quest , featuring an eclectic cast of space adventurers including Tim Allen, Alan Rickman, Tony Shalhoub, Sam Rockwell, and Sigourney Weaver.
