WandaVision this week blends the style of the Brady Bunch credits with action shots of Vision, Wanda, and the other characters now fully embracing the loud fashions and hairstyles of the transition from one decade to the next. It’s only the day after Wanda found herself pregnant, but already years seem to have passed, with the house now transformed into a mirror image of the Brady home’s interior. (Not every detail is the same, but the staircase by itself screams Brady Bunch.) Both our heroes seem understandably perplexed by how Wanda could suddenly be four months pregnant, but they’re otherwise oblivious to these rapid changes. And Wanda doesn’t really want to question things. Last week, she made the man in the beekeeper suit (possibly a nod to Marvel’s villainous AIM scientists, who dressed in modified beekeeper costumes) disappear because she didn’t want him disrupting her suburban fantasy. Here, Vision tries listing all the things that have … [Read more...] about ‘WandaVision’ Recap: Sibling Revelry

America’s Longest War Takes a Deadly New Turn
The rush of incoming aircraft roused Waheeda and her sleeping family. It was long after dark on a cool spring night in Afghanistan’s Nangarhar province, a Taliban stronghold of fertile valleys and stark mountains that borders Pakistan. The sound of warplanes is a familiar echo across the skies here, but it had never come so close to Waheeda’s mud-brick home. Her father, a village doctor named Nazar Gul, got up to see what was going on when the first bomb struck the family compound, killing five of her cousins. Her father was moving toward the blast site when a second bomb exploded, she says. In an instant, both of her parents and five of her sisters vanished. “It was dark and dusty, and nothing was visible,” the 14-year-old remembers. “I just knew they were all martyred.” … [Read more...] about America’s Longest War Takes a Deadly New Turn
Strippers, Drag Queens and Dancing Dogs: The Insane 1971 Party That Launched Alice Cooper
No one was to give any hint that the debutante in question was actually one of the freakiest rock & roll bands currently in existence. To make certain that Mo Ostin and Joe Smith attended, Regehr scheduled the affair for the evening of July 14, so it could double as a fete for Evelyn Ostin’s birthday. And this was where things got interesting, and expensive. After the bills topped seven grand, a massive amount for a single event in 1971, a very concerned Smith came to ask what the hell they were up to. Regehr gave him some kind of reasonable explanation, then told Shelley Cooper to stop sending the invoices to the finance office until after the party was over. “If it’s a success, they won’t care,” he explained to her. “If it’s not, then we’ll all be … [Read more...] about Strippers, Drag Queens and Dancing Dogs: The Insane 1971 Party That Launched Alice Cooper
