Netflix has dominated the Oscar documentary race the last few years, winning Documentary Feature in 2020 and 2018, but the release of the Academy shortlists Tuesday confirms it faces a battle this time around, from a rival streamer. Amazon Studios landed two films on the feature shortlist—Time, directed by Garrett Bradley, and All In: The Fight for Democracy, directed by Liz Garbus and Lisa Cortés. Time, which touches on mass incarceration through the experience of one Black family in Louisiana, must be considered a solid favorite in the Oscar race, having tied for the Gotham Award and amassing multiple critics’ prizes. Netflix made the Oscar shortlist, as expected, with its top two contenders—Crip Camp, directed by Nicole Newnham and Jim LeBrecht, and Dick Johnson Is Dead, from director Kirsten Johnson. Julia Louis-Dreyfus and HBO’s Veep came into the 71st Primetime Emmy Awards looking like a front-running candidate to make history but in the end the Academy voters elected to go in a different direction by making Fleabag the victor. Veep and Louis-Dreyfus were shockingly shut-out in favor of a scruffy newcomer with populist charms: Phoebe Waller-Bridge, the executive producer, creator, writer and star of Fleabag , was the unexpected winner in the category of best actress in a comedy series, which denied Louis-Dreyfus a chance to make history as the first performer to win nine Emmys. Louis-Dreyfus instead remains tied with Cloris Leachman for the most career Emmy wins (eight) by any performer. UPDATED, 6:45 PM Monday: The Hunger Games: Mockingjay – Part 2 pulled off a surprise of its own when international box office figures were retallied today. MJ2 reclaimed the top spot following an unexpected two-day “preview” surge by the Chinese title Surprise that appeared to give it the lead over Katniss and company on Sunday. Lionsgate reported that MJ2 grosses rose to $17.4M from Sunday’s estimated $15.4M, enough to put the franchise finale back on top for its fourth consecutive weekend offshore. The shuffle resulted in a short reign for Surprise (aka Surprise You’ll Never Think Of: Journey To The West , or Surprise: Journey To The West ), whose $17M Saturday-Sunday figures from some 35K preview showings (compared to about 25K regular screenings for Point Break ) initially appeared to best all other overseas titles for the weekend.
