Amanda Gorman dedicated her latest poem for Super Bowl LV to three frontline workers whom the NFL dubbed honorary captains ahead of the coin toss ... and she did their services all the justice in the world. The poet laureate -- who's been the talk of the town since her rousing reading at Joe Biden's inauguration -- was once again given a chance to show off her prose on the biggest stage in the world ... and she didn't disappoint, beaming in virtually with new original work. What a moment. @TheAmandaGorman #SBLV pic.twitter.com/v8VM9uhPww— NFL (@NFL) February 7, 2021 @NFL The three captains were James Martin (a Marine vet), Suzie Dorner (a nurse manager) and Trimaine Davis (an educator). Amanda went through each person's contributions during the pandemic, big and small, and highlighted how they've helped out their community. James provides his home to at-risk kids and streams football games for folks who aren't able to do it themselves; Trimaine donates laptops, internet … [Read more...] about Amanda Gorman Dedicates Super Bowl Poem to Frontline Workers

Phife Dawg: Read the Poignant Poems Rapper’s Mother Wrote About Tribe Called Quest MC
In her new book, Cheryl Boyce-Taylor uses poetry, journal entries, letters and other archival items to grapple with the loss of her son, the great A Tribe Called Quest MC Phife Dawg . The recently published Mama Phife Represents is described as a “patchwork quilt that follows the journey of a mother’s grieving heart” and a “hybrid book that recalls the death of a beloved son and follows his mother’s first two years of public and private mourning.” Along with original poems from Boyce-Taylor, the book includes drawings, emails, lyrics and notes that Phife — real name Malik Taylor — wrote to his parents starting at age eight. The five poems from Mama Phife Represents excerpted here find Boyce-Taylor grappling with Phife’s death in terms that are often achingly descriptive and abstract, but also brutally honest and stark. “When Her Child Dies” and “Stone” offer a glimpse into the former category, while “When a House Lives Alone” captures the devastatingly banal task of … [Read more...] about Phife Dawg: Read the Poignant Poems Rapper’s Mother Wrote About Tribe Called Quest MC
Hear Marianne Faithfull Tenderly Read Lord Byron’s Romantic Poem ‘She Walks in Beauty’
Marianne Faithfull pays tribute to England’s great romantic poets on her new album, She Walks in Beauty , which she made in collaboration with Bad Seeds and Dirty Three violinist Warren Ellis . They’re previewing the record with her reading of Lord Byron’s “She Walks in Beauty,” which he wrote in June 1814. Birds chirp on the recording before piano and ethereal synths provide a bed for Faithfull’s recitation of the poem, which describes a woman’s unparalleled grace. The video for the song, which was directed by Yann Orhan, features a painting by Colin Self. The album comes out on April 30th. “It’s very romantic, not like you imagine Byron to be,” Faithfull said of the poem in a statement. “It’s so beautiful, and that’s why I like it. I love the other side of Byron, too, but this is really amazing, sublime. And I was very drawn to the ability to do really beautiful rhymes. I think that’s from being a songwriter. It’s incredibly nice. Not what I connect with Lord Byron at … [Read more...] about Hear Marianne Faithfull Tenderly Read Lord Byron’s Romantic Poem ‘She Walks in Beauty’
Super Bowl 2021: Poet Amanda Gorman Honors NFL’s Three ‘Honorary Captains’
Youth National Poet Laureate Amanda Gorman — who spoke at President Joe Biden’s inauguration last month — presented a new piece dedicated to the three “honorary captains” the NFL selected to laud before the big game: educator Trimaine Davis, nurse manager Suzie Dorner, and Marine veteran James Martin. The trio were selected for recognition because they embodied the message of the NFL’s season-long It Takes All of Us campaign. “Poetry at the Super Bowl is a feat for art and our country, because it means we’re thinking imaginatively about human connection even when we feel siloed,” Amanda tweeted ahead of the show. “I’ll honor three heroes who exemplify the best of this effort. Here’s to them, to poetry, and to a #SuperBowl like no other.” Check it out below: What a moment. @TheAmandaGorman #SBLV pic.twitter.com/v8VM9uhPww — NFL (@NFL) February 7, 2021 “During this incredibly challenging time in … [Read more...] about Super Bowl 2021: Poet Amanda Gorman Honors NFL’s Three ‘Honorary Captains’
