Deadline’s Contenders Film Kicks Off Today – Watch The Livestream
Deadline’s signature Contenders event has come a long way since it started over a decade ago. Designed then—and now—as a kind of one-stop shop for industry awards voters, it is packed with clips and interviews to provide a good idea of which movies should be seen before casting a ballot. It started as an idea, and now has grown into a tradition. After a few years of focusing just on Oscar season in Los Angeles, our Contenders brand expanded to London, and then to New York as well. We also initiated an extremely popular Contenders TV event, and just two weeks ago, we launched spinoffs Contenders International and Contenders Documentary. … [Read more...] about Deadline’s Contenders Film Kicks Off Today – Watch The Livestream
Aaron Sorkin & Stars On ‘The Trial Of The Chicago 7’s “14-Year Collision Course” With Current Events – Contenders Film
The astounding thing is the events of the film took place over a half century ago but couldn’t feel more relevant. It is about a group of protesters accused of crossing state lines to cause a riot at the 1968 Chicago Democratic National Convention, and the subsequent trial in which they are tried as insurgents and instigators. Sound familiar? History is clearly repeating itself –the recent invasion of the U.S. Capitol by right-wing extremists and Donald Trump supporters is just the most recent evidence of that — but it is uncanny how urgently prescient this movie is, a film Sorkin says has taken 14 years to get to the screen after Steven Spielberg put it into motion and brought Sorkin in to do the screenplay. Sorkin would later end up directing it as well, and feels the timing is more important than ever. … [Read more...] about Aaron Sorkin & Stars On ‘The Trial Of The Chicago 7’s “14-Year Collision Course” With Current Events – Contenders Film
‘Never Rarely Sometimes Always’ Director Eliza Hittman On Telling “Intimate Story” About Reproductive Healthcare In America – Contenders Film
“I think a lot of the film came from my interest in reproductive rights,” she said, “and I was reading a lot of articles at the time about women who traveled to New York specifically to get abortions, and one article in particular was talking about all of the costs associated with this type of journey. So, it really came out of my own interest and desire to tell a very intimate story about how difficult it is to access reproductive care in America. I did a lot of research, but, ultimately, I wanted to craft a film that was very much a poetic odyssey out of these issues.” … [Read more...] about ‘Never Rarely Sometimes Always’ Director Eliza Hittman On Telling “Intimate Story” About Reproductive Healthcare In America – Contenders Film
Stanley Tucci & ‘Supernova’ Director Harry Macqueen On Love, Life And Loss – Contenders Film
“It’s a very personal story,” he says, “and it started when I was working with a lady who—unbeknownst to me and her at the time—had young-onset dementia. I was working with her for a year, and over the course of that year, I watched her completely change. Unfortunately, about a year after that, she had passed away, and it had a really profound effect on me. And it made me want to learn more about dementia—young-onset dementia specifically. So, I then went about researching it for about two or three years. I worked at various charities, and I spent a lot of time with people who are living with dementia. So, the story really is inspired by the time I spent with those people.” … [Read more...] about Stanley Tucci & ‘Supernova’ Director Harry Macqueen On Love, Life And Loss – Contenders Film
